Would relegation be good for some U.S. pro sports?

Yes,but given the anti-trust nature of professional leagues, there isn't the necessary amount of infrastructure and teams to do it.

  • No. This is a dumb idea. If the Yankees have a bad year who are you going to replace them with? The Montgomery Biscuits? Hell there is nobody to bring up in football and basketball.

  • I could think of a half dozen NBA teams to relegate

Football would be impossible because CFB is the semi-pro/farm-league system. NBA has the NBDL, however.

Like I said: because the American leagues don't have to adhere to anti-trust law, there aren't other competitive leaves that can feed into the top leagues.

The only sport it would be possible would e soccer because of the number of clubs and expansion possibilities with MLS,NASL,and USL.

  • what happened to one of my posts?

So if this occurred the Orioles would be playing the Long Island Ducks and Camden Riversharks?

Couldn't be any worse than playing the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Same thing with basketball as baseball. Are you really going to remove the Lakers from the NBA for a year and bring in some team nobody has heard of to replace them? The answer is no.

And for MLB the problem would be that the minor league teams are owned by the MLB teams. So if the Yankees are relegated and you bring in say the Gwinnet Braves to replace them, the Braves franchise then has two teams playing MLB. It's just not possible.

It may not be feasible but it needs to be talked about. The fact that some teams can be mediocre year-in, year-out and cash in at the end of the year is a disgrace. It's basically stealing money from fans. If I performed as poorly at my job as some clubs and their owners/players/staff/etc. do, I'd get fired in a heartbeat.

The Lakers wouldn't get relegated and if they did it would be like once every forty years, it wouldn't kill the league.

The whole point of relegation is to make sure the bottom teams continue playing at the end of the season. It's more incentive than getting the #1 pick if you ask me.

It's simply not possible to do. And the Lakers are just an example, there is no non-NBA team that could just pop into the NBA and compete out of nowhere. It's just a dumb idea.

Not sure whether that matters in regards to the OP's question, but I think it would be good for all the leagues except maybe the NFL because the NFL has pretty much perfected what you want from a sports league in terms of management and business.

The bottom teams aren't competing anyway, so who cares? The hope would be that it would be an incentive for the lowest teams to actually do something to improve.
