Would relegation be good for some U.S. pro sports?

Not sure whether that matters in regards to the OP's question, but I think it would be good for all the leagues except maybe the NFL because the NFL has pretty much perfected what you want from a sports league in terms of management and business.

I don't see how it would be good. You kick a team out, some team from the minors comes up, they can't cut it so you kick them out, bring up another team, they won't cut it either, so you kick them out and on and on. I don't see the point.

  • I am personally a fan of relegation, but it is not remotely feasible due to the business nature of American Sports leagues.

Because the idea is that is would be an incentive for every team to want to be good IE not suck and get relegated. You can say that every team wants to do that but c'mon, how many more years of mediocrity from the Pirates or the Royals or the Bobcats, etc., are you willing to take before you realize some owners just don't care? Fans still show up and pay and at the end of the year they get a big fat check from the TV deals. There really isn't any incentive for them to get better other than just, you know, getting better. But being lazy and still making bank appeals to a lot of people. And I bet you there would be a couple small-time teams in either the right locations or with a starving fan base that would do whatever it took to make it to the league if they had the chance.

  • Nah I don’t really see where it would be possible in any of the major sports. And besides tanking is one of the best things about the NBA. You suck, and you draft someone who is good. There is no value of having a mediocre team. Like for example the Atlanta Hawks.

Tanking is one of the main reasons I want to see change. It's offensive as a fan to watch my team just give up. Certainly couldn't do that in my job and expect to stay on.

I don’t watch Baseball or Hockey, but In Basketball one of the things I hated this year as a Piston’s fan was not gutting the team of all the decent players. I wanted them to play the scrubs and the young guy’s the whole season.

Not only did they not win, but they barely tried, and didn’t suck enough to probably earn us a high selection. The NBA is a star’s league and the only way you get good is by sucking, and drafting a star or having a team in a large market.

Look at what OKC is today. Their last couple of season’s in Seattle sucked. But by gutting the team they were able to draft, Durant, Westbrook, and Harden.

  • Heck yeah, as a Euro resident relegation is fun to watch. I think it works for Hockey and Baseball because they have minor leagues that could work. Teams would have to change relationships with their minor league clubs or something like that, but it would make it very interesting.

  • Relegation could only work if the sport has more than one professional league. Ex. an A league and a B league.

  • Absolutely need regulation, starting with a prohibition from using tax money to finance infrastructure for the teams, so that cities and states can't be held up to get/keep teams because someone else will use taxpayer dollars to provide them with shiny new stadiums...

  • Keep government out of sports. If you don't like something about a sport, don't participate in it.

  • Couldnt it just involve the current teams? Like one year you decide the bottom 8 teams will be relegated to the new B league. Then every year after that the the teams in the A league would fight it out not to be relegated, while the 8 B league teams battle to get back to the A league. This wouldnt work in most sports because of the salary cap. Would be too hard for teams with bad contracts to have a chance
