Yo BIG10 Fans

  • Question for you -

    Do y'all like your Commissioner?

I have very low opinion of him for:
    a) Blocking a Plus-1 first time it was proposed, and
    b) Angling this time around to prevent the best 4 teams in the land for playing for the title

However I am clearly biased. I love it when SEC teams beat y'all. And while the BIG10 obviously deserves a voice in the playoffs discussions, it rubs me the wrong way that Delaney - who has been so key it holding a playoff back - gets a voice in shaping what the playoffs are going to be like only after he was basically compelled to change his position due to public pressure.

Obviously he has been and is doing what he thinks is best for his conference. And I can't begrudge him for that.

So the question is - Do you think he is good for the BIG10, college football, etc - What's your opinion?

Best conference commissioner in the country. And you owe him a big thank you for your new network.

  • Delaney is a douche overall, but a competent one. Holding up the playoffs sucks, but I understand why he's fighting for some of the things that benefit our conference (Rose Bowl, homefield, etc.) He also favors the "moneymakers" in the conference (UM and OSU), so MSU fans hate him for that. To his credit, I think he has handled the conference expansion thing very well. Nebraska is a great addition and the new conference alignment makes for some great competition.

  • Seems to be a douchebag of a person, but is DAMN good at his job.

As long as he keeps doing his job the way he has been, then he's fine with me.

  • He is doing what was best for his conference. He seems to at the very least try to make sure his conference gets it's way. He brought his conference to have a CC game. He took his conference to have BTN which assured that the conference woud make top four money at least. The playoffs didn't benefit his conference. Taking out the Rose Bowl would not help his conference. He fights for his conference and doesn't care about the others. How is he a bad commish again? Slive does pretty much the same for us.

This. Every time he opens his mouth in public he says something that rubs me the wrong way.
But he has done a ton of good to the schools he represents - even if it can be at the expense of the "right" thing. He's handled the big things - $$$, membership, re-alignment - perfectly, but some of the things he does really rub me the wrong way.

Exactly. No commissioner is perfect. But overall, he's done a great job. As far as resisting a playoff is concerned, the B10 has done very well under the BCS system. Not in terms of nattys, but in terms of access to BCS bowls and money. It's certainly not obvious we would have done better under a playoff system. Now if we could just get him to ditch the awful B1G logo and hokey division names. smh

Not to pick, but the current estimate is $24.6 million.

I agree. The BTN and the new alignment are awesome... except for the logo and division names. I would have much preferred to have North and South. Only Wisconsin would be geographically inconsistent, but who cares?

  • He's the best commissioner in college athletics.

    1) Created the BTN... other conferences followed suit.
    2) Added the best school (fit-wise) available to the conference. Other conferences scrambled.
    3) Spearheaded the PAC-12/Big Ten alliance. The SEC and Big XII followed.
    4) Preserved the Rose Bowl bid for the Big Ten.
    5) Established a foothold as on of the future "Big 4" conferences (and may be driving the bus)
    6) Positioned the Big Ten to earn a monster tier 1 and 2 TV deal by essentially partnering with FOX in order to put pressure on ESPN.

Is he an ass? YES. But he gets things done. #7? Notre Dame. And if you don't think that he has had a hand in the distruction of the Big East (ND olympic sports current home) and the devaluation of the ACC (rumored to be the choice conference for ND to join if they would stop being independent), then you haven't been paying attention.

If you don't like the Big10 you probably won't like Delaney. But the truth of the matter is that he has consistently kept the Big10 in the forefront when it comes to making money for the conference. The conference is rock solid financially and that lends itself to being able to go out and expand with a team like Nebraska. Look at the rest of the expansion picture... it really isn't that impressive. The last two times the Big10 has expanded it has picked up PSU and Nebraska. Those are homerun football additions. The Big10 network has been a complete success and has been the model for other conferences. People forget that the Big10 actually pushed for and was the first to implement the official review in Major College football. Every fan wants a playoff, but you have to remember that the commissioner of a league has to do what's in the best interest for the financial stability of the league... You better believe that his voice will be heard when it comes to ironing out the details of College Football's changes to the postseason.

I forgot about instant replay. Hey, CFB (and NFL) fans ... you owe Delany a thank you for instant replay, too!

  • The only complaint I have (besides him generally coming off as abrasive)-- he didn't fight for home field advantage or a mid-western site for play-off games.

  • I like him a great deal. Fans seem to hate him because the ESPN's of the world have taught them to hate commissioners, always see a conspiracy, and generally think they could do a better job even though they work in low level management for 50K a year.

His list of accomplishments is long, not even considering things like replay (which is often forgotten).

"We don't care about anything but winning. No one cares about ethical standards thats for losers..." BUCKNUTS 21 self trolling.

Plus, he's tried to move the tOSU/UM game.

I agree on Legends and Leaders, but I think moving The Game was a head fake. They got us so focused on complaining about that, we stopped complaining about UM and OSU ending up in opposite divisions. Delany is always two steps ahead.

  • Delaney is great for the Big Ten. The only problem I have with him is that he seems to favor the "big" schools in the conference ahead of the majority of the schools--not exactly great for Iowa all the time. I would also note that the things he's done that often seem the most "backward" turn out to be some of the most foresightful things that he does.
