Butch Davis is not the moral man they'll look for. All major coaches are sleezes but you can't get one who's proven to be so.

I think they need to decide if they want to go looking for a guy for this year or hang the interim tag on someone.
Gus would be an easy hire for them, IMO, but I would hang an interim tag on someone and see how Gus does as a head coach at least for one year before I made that move.
To answer your question, I think Saban would definitely support Smart taking that job if offered, but I think that he would be better off taking the job heading into next season rather than this one though, although if the job is offered this year, you have to take it if that's a place that you would like to go and an Arkansas job should be very attractive for any first time head coach.
It would be crazy to see what would happen with Micheal Dyer if Gus was to get the job.

like Kirby but still not sure about Strong quite yet ; anybody that is already on staff a consideration ? Are the kids that were recruited in the class that is supposed to report this summer allowed to go somewhere else given the coach being let go ?

Not that I would be against that, but I am not sure that is in the cards.
Those type of moves just haven't worked out well very often and certainly hasn't worked for us before. I think the hope would be that Smart could get somewhere else and come back in 'X' amount of years when Saban retires if he has success.
Of course, the more Smart turns down oppurtunities, the more it will begin to look like that may be the case. I think he would have gotten the Ole Miss job if he wanted it. It could be a ploy to keep his name a priority for a lot of searches, but not actually take any of the jobs.
All guesses at this point though.

I dont know either but I have a huge Bama contingent in Pratville and they all seem to think this is the case. I agree that these types of moves dont always work out the best although I could point to Loyd Carr as a success, Stoops as a success, and a few others. He damn sure is the best defensive coordinator I have seen in a long time. Last years' D was the best I've seen. Ever.
I have always liked Butch Davis for a few reasons.
1) He can win
2) He can damn sure recruit
3) He is a likable guy as a head coach
I really enjoy Razorback fans and I hope they land the best possible coach they can find. IMO that is Davis. I do find it odd that a few vacancies have popped up in the SEC over the last few years and Davis didnt jump onboard. Maybe he doubts himself in the SEC like our last coach did without Tebow?
