You gotta offer the job to Kirby Smart right?

I dont know either but I have a huge Bama contingent in Pratville and they all seem to think this is the case. I agree that these types of moves dont always work out the best. He damn sure is the best defensive coordinator I have seen in a long time. Last years D was the best I've seen. Ever.

I agree. I don't think he gets the credit for the defense that he deserves either. Most people think that it is still Saban running the defense, which isn't really the case.

He is running the defense that Saban has taught him and they definitely gameplan together, but after that it's all on Smart. What most people don't understand is that Saban has the same input on the offensive side of things. The offense we run is the offense that Saban has drawn up. One reason that Applewhite left was because he was given a playbook and told these are the plays. It is also a reason that it was tough for him to find OC's in the past. He just has total control of the team as far as gameplans on both sides of the ball. It is up to the OC and DC to call the actual game, but it is the gameplan that he has put together along with them.

I've been to a decent number of practices since he has been here and unless it is a scrimmage situation, you wouldn't even know he was the head coach. During position drills and technique drills, he his only focused on the DB's, with the only exception being occassionally with the QB's, probably more so during QB battles for a starting position.

I dont know either but I have a huge Bama contingent in Pratville and they all seem to think this is the case. I agree that these types of moves dont always work out the best although I could point to Loyd Carr as a success, Stoops as a success, and a few others. He damn sure is the best defensive coordinator I have seen in a long time. Last years' D was the best I've seen. Ever.

I have always liked Butch Davis for a few reasons. 1) He can win 2) He can damn sure recruit 3) He is a likable guy as a head coach

I really enjoy Razorback fans and I hope they land the best possible coach they can find. IMO that is Davis. I do find it odd that a few vacancies have popped up in the SEC over the last few years and Davis didnt jump onboard. Maybe he doubts himself in the SEC like our last coach did without Tebow?

It's tough to get the job done in the SEC. Look at all the guys that are struggling at the moment. Even Richt, who should be considered one of the top guys in the game if you just look at his resume and don't dig any deeper than that, is on a constant hot seat because he can't win it all and he has consistantly been beaten by his major rival.

Petrino may have gotten over the hump, but never beat Bama, and pretty much threw up all over himself in that game each year. They were never going to clear the hurdle of being a better program than LSU, although he did have better success in that game. Throw in the fact that Auburn did what he couldn't do and the addition of Texas A&M to the West and you have to wonder how attractive the Arkansas job is for an elite guy not just looking to run from a horrible Falcons situation. Arkansas got lucky with that hire as much as he saw Arkansas as a top program. Same goes for Spurrier to USCe. It would have never happened if he just wasn't desperate to get back into to college and more importantly an SEC school with good golf courses.

Even Muschamp who would be the Texas coach probably this year if he would have stuck around has people questioning him. I don't think it is deserved, based on the mess he took over.

On another note. I don't question Meyer's tactics or the decisions he made. It is up to him when he wants to coach and when he wants to leave. I just question his ability to actually develop a program and maintain that program at or near that level. The lack of discipline and physicality (on defense) left Florida in a hole. The rest with him being a schumbag, I couldn't care less about.

I know from some Arkansas guys that him being part of the Nutt fiasco, regardless of whether he left or not would seriously hurt his chances.

I just don't see it happening.

  • What about Morris from Clemson?

Heck of an offensive coach. Turned Tahj Boyd into an effective QB. Can recruit pretty well. No character issues.

Would the new contract he signed just be too expensive to leave for a HC job at Arky?

Money will not be an issue at Arkansas. They'll pay up to 4 million or so if the coach warrants it.

I'd say 4 years, but honestly nothing would shock me. Depends on how successful he is IMO. If he can get a 4th MNC in the next 2 or 3 years, he might end up being more driven to get to a record tying 6. That's a long shot because it is so hard to win one and I don't think he'd be shocked to coach 8 more years and not get another period.

Everything he says is so carefully crafted that it's hard to tell what his true motivation is as far as records go, if he even has any.

How long do you think Smart will be willing to wait for the HC job at Bama? He’s still young.

If that is in the plans, then I think he'll wait how ever long he has to and they'll pay him considerably to do so. There are no uneasy feelings between him and Saban as there were in the Brown/Muschamp and Bowden/Jimbo situations, so if he is going to get the job, I don't think there is going to be the backroom discussions of trying to push him out or anything like that.

I have my doubts whether that is the plan or not, so I don't think that is what is in his head. I think he just figures if he is going to make a million dollars to be a DC, then he wants to make sure that the HC job that he takes is one that he can be very successful in and also one that is going to pay very well.

Or is that too simple? I would think Saban would tell him to take it as well.

Saban won't tell him to take it, he will have some patronizing, condescending remark about Arky being trash or something. He can't let his pet recruiter go without a fight.

That said, yes you have to talk to him, IMO. Maybe not first choice, but he's gotta be on the list.

no it wont. To many arkansas fans would pull their support for the program if they did that. The players, and a lot of fans want Garrick Mcgee. So far I'm pulling for Patterson from TCU but I may change my mind in a little bit.
