I have the Roku 2 HD. Works great. We cut off our cable and have the Roku 2 Hd with Hulu Plus and Netflix and pay $15-20 a month for everything we watch as opposed to 80-100 a month.

So the Play-On is just on-demand stuff, not live streaming of actual channels (except for games on ESPN3 and other sports channels)?

Yes, it does. It is a software server that needs a host computer to run on. As a bonus though, it does allow you to stream to a mobile device (a la sling box).

No there are channels besides espn 3 that it has live broadcasts for. Pretty sure the food network is one and there are a couple of others. Sorry I can't remember them now but if it is important to you bump this thread Monday and I will tell you which channels have live programming.

Logically I would think yes, but I don't know for certain. If you can stream on your computer though you can stream it to your TV.
