any followers of "Darwin's theory" here?

  • If so, tell me why you believe his theory.
I will tell you up front that I am not a believer of evolution. I am a Christian just looking to hear your points of view. Nothing more. I would like to have the freedom to ask questions if the opportunity arises.

I believe in evolution because of the overwhelming amount of evidence that supports it. A good place to start is here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evidence_of_common_descent

Quite frankly, even a brief examination of genetic codes of related species leaves only 2 options:
    1. Evolution by natural selection
    2. God deliberately imitating evolution by theory of natural selection

As for the whole, "are we descended from primates" thing. Overwhelming evidence says, yes.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosome_2_(human)

It is quite clear from genetic analysis that the difference between humans and other great ape descendants is the fusion of ape chromosomes 2p and 2q in order to form the human chromosome 2.

By the way, your sentence, "I am not a believer in evolution" is hardly specific enough. Do you not believe that the genetic composition (and as a result the phenotypic traits) of organisms change over time? Or do you not understand/believe the selection of the most fit species as the driver for this change?

  • We now know, very recently even during your parents' lifetimes, that there are over one trillion billion planets in the Universe. The same physical laws and general chemical makeup pervades the entire thing.

Of the eight planets we know much of anything about we are on one and we are very heavily leaning towards the belief that microbial life once lived on Mars. 20 years ago it was different and due to certain sociocultural factors most arent really up to date, but today....in 2013.....faith aside it is obvious we arent alone and we will simply find out more over time. So there are a trillion billion planets and so far life is on 1 of 8 and maybe 2 of 8. hmmmm

Essentially every culture in the history of mankind has had a metamyth and deity that explains where we came from and what we need to do to please _____. You are having the exact same experience the Nordic child had in the 1200s and the aboriginal child had in Africa, etc for eons. There is a large gap between observed and understood phenomena. The gap is filled with your people group's metamyth and deistic storyline. To really think that the kid in Scandinavia who's parents told him that Oden was god was lied to and not "chosen" while your parents told you about jesus, or the cultural movement that undergirds the time and place in which you were born told you about Jesus and that it is actually the Truth is very myopic.

JMO, I have wrestled with faith during my life but to me it's obvious. There is a special nature to life and humanity's higher order functions draw it out of us. Strange things happen, miracles even, etc. But to be that guy who says his metamyth is the actual real one and everyone else's are just simply incorrect is a narrative in and of itself on how easily the human mind puppeteers itself.

To say you dont believe in evolution reveals that you really haven't done much other than ask your Christian friends and mentors. Evolution is proven, its real, its happened in our brief time studying it. It was something the "church" denied and denied and then accepted and now tries to explain. To say you don't believe in evolution is to say you don't believe that the 400 different breeds of dogs you can see around you dont really exist.

Not to be a dick, but the species of dogs which exist, although evidence for the fact that species genetic code can change and this change can manifest itself in physical traits, is NOT evidence for Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Dog breeds are created artificially, hence the term artificial selection. This is similar to the changes breeding has made to corn over time, antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and numerous other examples.

Sorry - I just figure if we're gonna list the evidence we should be a little anal retentive.

  • I don't want to start a flame war here, but if you do not believe in evolution you are just pretending it doesn't exist. Same with climate change and various other issues that a good percentage (around 30% I believe) do not believe in. Although all scientific data supports conclusions contrary to their beliefs, they deny evolution and climate change.

Not directly but if it isn't bare bones proof to someone then I can't help you. Through human guidance we went from a single wolf to 400 breeds ranging from Chihuahas to great danes. Evolution is happening all around us and faster than almost anyone ever thought it would.

Listen, I get why religion exists and the very nature of it and our interaction of it means that discussions wont end it for most folks. I do believe over the next 75-125 years there will be a hyper secularization of society and religion will shrivel badly across almost all demographics and disciplines world wide.

Well aside from actually believing in a supreme being based largely on Panbabylonian mythology god is really just the entirety of physical laws that define the universe. So yes, god did cause evolution.

Your showing examples if micro evolution and not macro. Micro is proven and has been observed, macro hasent.

So we probably have on record the last 200 years of the climate and the earth, if you believe in evolution, is billions of years old. Seems like a pretty small sample to be able to call something fact.

lol, ok? If you took the age of earth and used the height of the eiffel tower as the timeline of its existence. The top layer of paint on the very tip top point of the tower would represent human history. The very top, atomic layer of THAT single layer of paint represents the time we've been participating in disciplined scientific research.

It's truly remarkable and startling that we've observed mico-evolution in that time. Extrapolated by any logical measure and it proves macro as well.

  • Your still saying something is fact that has not ever been proven or observed. That's not science, that religion. Your believing something that hasn't been proven

A fossil from the Fossil "record"

You said we didn't have anything on record and I wanted to see what you said.

I know people who believe fossils are just naturally occurring rocks. 100% SRS.
They also believe Satan made dinosaurs.

Also another record of climate is attached to this post. Ice core sampling.

Do not believe fossils prove evolution. No gradual changes from one type of species to another in the fossil record. No “inconceivably great” number of transitional forms. No, the fossil record is not evidence.
