    Whether or not it's a good idea we're probably going to do it anyway. We're human. Our curiosity levels alot of the time get in the way of our ability to reason and/or make a good judgment call.

    Same goes for alien contact. If we one day have the opportunity to contact aliens we probably will. Our curiosity will get the best of us whether or not it's a good idea.

    I think you are right. Great line too btw. I think it would be awesome to bring the mammoth back, but fear we won't stop there and worry that we may start tinkering with ourselves one day. And that has disaster written all over it.

    Governments are so far behind technology, that by the time they try to stop a problem that could occur, scientist will have probably already done it, and opened Pandora's box.

    And honestly, I wouldn't doubt we've already begun to tinker with humans in some underground government lab 3 miles underground somewhere.

    Google stem cell research, genetic engineering, etc. etc.

    We're screwing with the human genome as much as we can.

    No one has the slightest frickin' idea. The only thing I'll guarantee are lots of ethics trials.

    The positives could be amazing though. No more type 1 diabetes. No more autism (well, the kind that is genetically inherited). No more achondroplasia. No more people born blind, deaf, anything. Dramatically increased resistance to cancer (not sure if we'll ever be 'immune', but some people think we could be). Dramatically increased resistance to Alzheimers. Potential cures for MS, ALS, etc.

    It's going to change the world like nothing we've ever seen.

    I can't imagine it's ever a cost-effective measure to recreate enough genetic diversity within a species to avoid an extinction vortex.

    Besides, the second we kill something off, another organism fills the previous one's niche, so we'd have to make them able to out-compete everyone else for resources.

    Too much money, too much time.

  • Too much competition in their ecosystems to warrant reintroduction to their natural environments. Their environments have also changed a lot since they've been gone. Today, THEY would be the invasive species.
    However, humans are an arrogant race. They'll probably do it anyway and f*ck up the world further. I can't help but wonder when some dumb a-hole is going to genetically engineer animals to have features they don't naturally have (like a tiger with gigantic bat wings or a tarantula the size of a car).
