Genetic engineering geared toward eliminating birth defects and other common health problems as we age should be the first order of business. In the future you should be able to guarentee yourself a healthy child at conception and not be faced with having to abort a fetus at 5 months if it has serious problems. Insurance companies or the government should have no problem covering the costs of such procedures when you factor in the amount of money that could be saved by not having to cover children with serious defects. The costs of treating one disabled child for life in some cases reaches 10 million dollars.

I could see insurance companies offering huge discounts for genteically engineered people. But i think you have to approach it as a preventative measure and not tinker with the genetic code in order to get a super human thats insanely intelligent with perfect looks and an NFL style body. Thats just weird and would be looked at as another race of people almost that would be preferred over non engineered people. That would be a disaster and lead to a whole new level of class discrimination like in Gattaca. Its a very complicated and complex issue that would be hard to regulate.

To me the perfect situation would be to be born perfectly healthy with no predisposistions for any health problems as we age and slow down or halt aging at around 30 but leave our biological life clock alone where its impossible to live past 120. Living forever is good for no one but living to 100 in the body of a 30 year old would be cool. What im most interested in is regrowth of certain tissues. Like say youre like me and have had 3 meniscus suregeries on one knee and are down to hardly any cartliage left. It would be mighty helpful if you could trigger your body to regrow that tissue instead of having to replace it by surgery, which should be possible very soon. I see no problem with taking your own cells and telling them to grow into cartliage for your knee that could then be implanted.

No. Not at all. Us being able to bring back extinct animals does not disprove natural selection. What kind of crazy round-a-bout "logic" are you using here?

Wasn't trying to "disprove" natural selection. Saying if you believe in natural selection, why would you try to bring something extinct back. It was naturally selected to be extinct.
