iPhone5 unveiled.

It is interesting that they updated the hardware, but at the same time it feels stale. Maps and Passbook are the only real software additions which is kind of disappointing.

NFC would be nice, but I have a feeling that with all the security concerns over it, Apple might just skip it all together, or they are waiting until they can get a really secure version of it (just try and make an app for the iPhone and see how restricted you are in the sandbox that is the phone for security reasons). If someone wants I can provide stuff about holes in NFC, but that doesn't need to clog up this thread.

I think from here on out Apple will be behind in the phone market in terms of advancements because they want a smooth user experience for the average joe. Basically it feels like anyone should be able to pick it up and use it. E.G. grandparents using facetime to call grandchildren - my grandmother can't really use any technology, but she can use facetime to call someone if I give her my phone.

Apple also wants a seamless experience, which means more time in QA hammering out bugs. It took them 2 years to get 4G LTE into the phone.

I don't mean that as a slam against Android devices. I like Android a lot, and in some ways more than the iPhone because they can do more and are more open (much easier to develop in that environment).

I just don't think in terms of the phone market Apple will ever be out in front again. Who knows, maybe they surprise me, but today was a bit disappointing. It feels the same like the 4S, that if you are 2-3 generations of iPhone back and you still want an iPhone, then its worth the upgrade, but if you would have to pay more because you are still in contract then it isn't worth it. I think I will pass, am happy with my 4S which I only got after upgrading from the original.

its the same approach they take in all aspects of business. slow release of new technology to warrant you to "upgrade". the other systems (Android, PC) allow for the manufacturers to customize and produce any hardware specs they want (cutting edge all the time, no delays).

from an investment standpoint, Apple is very smart. they vertically integrate the process and control everything, which also helps to have a ridiculously loyal following. but from a consumer's standpoint, the openness of Android is much better. you have hundreds of options (low end, middle, and high end devices that all come with different screen sizes processors, etc.).

We have just gotten to the point that an iPhone release really is nothing new. Seriously, nothing Apple showed today in the new iPhone has a wow factor

  • Depends I guess. Do you have an Apple computer? Having other Apple technology helps in the seamless department especially with iCloud.

That being said they are different, and even the UI could be the deciding factor for some people because not everyone will get the full benefit of either phone. Go try out both in stores first and see what feels most comfortable. Don't choose solely on tech specs or advances unless you are going to use something often enough to make it the deciding factor IMO. Sorry I can't go either way. I have an iPhone for personal and a Galaxy for work if that helps out but that was my preference. Each can do the other function ie iPhone for work or Galaxy for personal.

I want to try the IPhone for the apps because I don't like Androids market at all. Are the apps better, the same?

What does that even mean? Look at the specs. Look at the capabilites. IPhones are great for people that don't want much from a phone. My grandma just got the iPhone 4. Android is for people that want the most out of their phone. IPhone 5 hasn't released yet, and the SIII is better than it.

Customization, web surfing options, bigger screen, super amoled screen which I like better than retina display...

Customization the biggest thing. Everything from keyboard(hundreds of options for free) to themes for the phone. I can completely change the way my phone looks and operates in a second. IPhone is set in its ways unless you jailbreak, but you can root an android to have even more capabilities. I had iPhone for 2 years. Switched to Android and the Galaxy Note and gave myself a swift kick in the juts for waiting so long.

  • I'm personally disappointed the iPhone screen is getting bigger. I don't get why people have to show off having a big screen. I want my mobile phone to be, you know, mobile. My buddy has to keep his in his backpack because it won't fit in his pocket. No thanks.
And I don't understand how being able to change the keyboard and theme make the phone any better??

Your friend must wear those skinny jeans. I have the Note, and it fits ij my front pocket just as comfortably as my iPhone did because of how thin it is. I wear normal jeans and dress pants to work, btw.

Oh, and the two things I mentioned was just that. Two things. There is much more. This coming from a former iPhone user. I have a lot of experience with both.

once you start using Swype keyboard (a replacement keyboard, there's literally hundreds of different kinds) on Android, you'll never go back. you don't even need to look at the phone to type because you don't even type. you just slide you thumb around and it knows what you want to say

  • They really did seem to go the way of their 3 release. This should be called the 4GS. I expected a little more with a new phone. Sure it's a lot faster than my 4, and a LITTLE bit bigger, but I bet older releases of android have near the same specs. Will be interesting to see how their new Maps looks compared to Googles. I expected a lot more app changes as well as specs. I guess I'll see what iOS 6 is like in a couple weeks.

I really think I'm gonna switch back to android when my contract is up in a couple months. My gf just got the s2 from her dad and it seems like a pretty slick phone. I thought the note looked pretty sweet from
It's commercials. I'll definitely have options lol.

Speech to text has gotten a lot better since the original droid had it. Another great quality for android that iPhone hasn't used.

They're late to the game with those things like turn by turn, speech, panaramic pics, now pics while filming.

and jellybean has offline speech to text (no internet connection required). previous version of Android and all versions of iOS require data connection to convert your speech

    uhhhh

    1. AU is the little brother to Bama
    2. Droid is the little brother to iPhone.

    pretty simple

Getting the most out of your phone????? Please explain what the Droid does that the Iphone does not have the ability to do??

    Leppycole

  • About time Apple increased its screen size. I'm not sure what its direct competition is but the Galaxy Nexus has a 4.65" and the Droid Razr has a 4.3". I'd say 4" is the minimum these days.

If you have to ask, that means you have no experience with android, and are just being a fan boy. If you would actually sit down with an android, work with it and explore the capabilities, you would know that iPhone is store brand while android is the real thing.

Lets not even go into the specs of the phones in which Google dominates the market.

Customization typically equals going to the AT&T or Verizon store and requesting to reset the phone because "Dude, I F#%Ked it up..."

You can customize an iPhone, but they do make so you cannot completely f- it up.

Know many guys at work with Droids that bitch because the phone crashes and is prone to jamming when using multiple applications.

It's a phone not a Football Conference or a Political Party that you have to sh!t all over because it is the one you do not have. Fanboy has skippy in the cupboard and comes on here shitting on Peter Pan because Skippy spreads better in his opinion on sandwich bread.
