its 2012 why do we still have to pay

  • for all these cable channels we don't watch

Isn't it about time some company comes out with a pick your own channels option. not tiers but literally of you want 15 mixed channels you can?

Why the hell do I have to pay for 70+ channels I have never watched once. The day that happens half these networks will go off the air because no one ever watches them. Is just such a waste

  • Because all the channels are owned by like 5 companies, so they don't want you to be able to choose. They want you to buy the one channel you want to watch and force you to buy the other 10 owned by them that you don't really want.

My problem is time warner blocks ESPN3 on my 360 so i dont have a great option there, unless I keep hooking my laptop up which is annoying.

If I could pick like 10 channels, Sports Package and HBO I would be happy. Maybe Apple TV or Google TV will change it to this..but I will need to get another fast internet provider around here because Time Warner Blocks all good Streaming options

and once they force the channels into your home they make a killing with advertising by selling the fact that millions of people have access to the channel. It doesnt even matter that most of the channels on a cable plan go unwatched.

  • I've been reading a lot into ditching cable in favor of internet options. Can anyone explain the benefits/options to do this? Cost?

It's way cheaper but the quality isn't always there. What kind of stuff do you want to know?

  • I assume it's the same reason that when you go to buy a new car you have to get upgrades and accessories in packages rather than picking and choosing them individually: Assures the company makes a bigger profit and saves them time/money in keeping all of that in order for each particular situation.

I watch a ton of netflix and downloaded shows.

I currently have RSS feeds set up in torrents that are set to download the shows I watch and dump them into a folder my media server shares across my network. From that, I can watch them on my TV through my ps3. Downloading shows means that I can't watch them until either later that night or the next day, but with Tivo I found that I wouldn't watch many shows the night they aired anyway.

I'm giving this all a try during the summer as there is much less TV to be watched anyway. I kept my internet with the same company, so worst case scenario is I call and re-order the service when fall rolls around.

    Nice. Some good suggestions there.

Here are a few sites I use for entertainment.

If you're going to download torrents, I recommend installing Peer Block to mask your activity.

  • How would you watch sports, in HD, without paying another site? ESPN3 still gets blocked by a lot of providers. Firstrow doesn't stream HD, I use it for nfl games.

I'll add watchseries.eu -- great for streaming tv shows. For streaming movies www.movie2k.to is good.
