obama trying to sneak in illegal aliens

Kind of a head-scratcher IMO. Obviously pandering for votes, but it seems more likely to cost him far more independent votes then it would gain him votes from a hispanic community already inclined to vote for him.

Not true actually, When you offer America 3 choices: #1 Deport, #2 Path to citizenship, or #3 work permits, 66% choose either 2 or 3. As for the legality of this, that's an absurd argument from the right. Bush issused FAR more executive orders than Obama, and was perfectly within his legal rights to do so. The constitution says that the executive office is allowed to deal with the laws they have to enforce however they want. This is completely within their purview. Finally, to our Republican friends who want to get pissed, and especially to Mitt Romney...

No, it really doesn't. Especially when in the case you referenced the worst that could happen is said woman might have to drive further to have an abortion.

But if you don't believe me, just check in with the pollsters on how that "republican war on women" meme is doing.

It's becoming more and more difficult to have an abortion. Mississippi,Virginia, and Michigan are essentially closing all of them in their state. Most rules say you have to have waiting periods before and pre-visits with all these other rules.

It's already taboo and emotionally stressful enough, but now you have to take off work twice or more, drive half-way across state or across state lines, sit in a doctor's office and listen to some speel written by a bunch of males in said state's congress and "pro-life" groups, go back home and then do the same thing all over again. Moreover, said regulations and rules add to the cost of said procedure which only makes it more inaccessible to women who are less off (who need it most).

I'm still really confused with what's wrong with the two policies outlined by the WH today:

    1) Let's not worry about wasting our time rounding and prosecuting these non-criminals and focus on the criminal ones causing problems

    2) Giving a path to citizenship to these younger undocumented citizens who were brought here by their parents that follow certain criteria: been here for 5 continuous years, graduated from HS or served in the military, and no felonies or multiple minor misdemeanors.

Essentially we're not wasting are time on undocumented aliens who aren't causing problems and trying to better themselves do we can naturalize them and them get them paying taxes.

Not sure what's the big deal? shrug

I didn't make any statements on executive authority, so I won't respond to that. As for your thoughts that this will bolster Obama in any way with demographics that don't already favor him, I'd brace for disappointment.

Ahh but this is actually pretty genius idea from the Obama campaign. Right now, the biggest impendiment to an Obama re-election is not the economy - the majority of Americans believe Bush is still at fault for our current situation, while not really understanding it's actually Clinton if we have to blame someone - and don't trust Romney's economics. Basically, the economy puts Romney at striking distance of Obama. It's basically steady right now, it won't get worse, and will probably slightly improve going forward. Where is this election going to be decided? Voter turnout. Obama has somewhat struggled to gain 08 enthusiasm among Blacks, hispanic, and the young. This stuff is like catnip to them.

Then there's the inherent trap in all of this. The stronger the Republicans come out against, and is Romney promises to end this executive order on Day 1? The more he fires up hispanics to vate against him, and for Obama.

It'll change the % points a little bit in Obama's favor, I think, but the greater impact is in enthusiasm.

Ladies must love you. Seriously, can you give me one good scientific reason for why abortions should be made illegal in a given state?

All these abortion laws are doing are punishing women for being women. There's absolutely no good reason why abortions shouldn't be available as an option - a woman is free to make choices regarding her own body. Regulation of those choices by anyone else is the same as legislators passing a law declaring that men can no longer get vasectomies.

To be clear, there is no pathway to citizienship. It's a work permit which does nothing to advance citizenship. These people still can't vote - though they will be taxed a much greater deal however.

There's nothing wrong it. But it's designed to lift the enthusiasm of the political left and Hispanics, and piss off the political right and set a trap for Romney regarding hispanics, in a similar fashion to the one sprung by by the GOP regarding contraception (though that was purely accidental by Obama. it was a dumb rule he got lucky with).

This is pure politics, that happens to be good policy.

  • So Romney was actually somewhat smart about this:

"I believe the status of young people who come here through no fault of their own is an important matter to be considered, and it should be resolved on a long-term basis.

"I believe the status of young people who come here through no fault of their own is an important matter on a long term basis so they know what their future will be in this country. I think the action that the president took today makes it more difficult to reach that longterm solution because an executive order is, of course, just a short term matter. It could be reversed by some president."

"I happen to agree with Marco Rubio. He said that this is an important matter. We have to find a long term solution but that the presidents action makes reaching a longterm solution more difficult. If I'm president we'll do our very best to have that kind of long term solution that provides certainty and clarity for the people who come into this country, through no fault of their own, by virtue of the action of their parents"

Romney did not respond to questions as to whether he would reverse the order if elected.

Well the women who need it are going to do two things:

    1) go to a backdoor clinic that is unsafe, unregulated and black market.

    2) Keep the kid and will statistically be more likely to cause all sorts of socio-economic problems

  • btw, Rubio and Romney said something hilarious there, which is "we need a long term solution!". Who the heck do they think has been BLOCKING a long term solution, which meant the only path Obama had was by executive order? And at some point, Romney is going to have to answer if he'd reverse this order as President.

Having a better opportunity for work and life in addition to showing you are being a good worker/person is a sure-fire way to help in the naturalization process.

It's not necessarily a set path to citizenship, it definitely is a step.

See, that's the problem though - I understand where you're coming from, but if we start going by "when you believe someone is alive" then abortions will be illegal in a heartbeat. If we go by scientific evidence, for which the standard of "alive" is viability outside the womb, then a woman is still permitted early term abortions, and by the time a fetus is viable outside the womb, most doctors won't perform an abortion anyways due to health concerns for the mother (unless the birth itself would cause even more complications).

I'm not contesting the availability of late-term abortions, I'm arguing against the ridiculous notion that a woman shouldn't ever be able to get an abortion.

Seriously dude, take the hook out of your mouth. You parroting these silly claims show why abortion is such a silly sacred cow issue that both sides use to whip up their base.

On the contrary - pro-choice supporters don't use abortion to whip up their base, they use attacks on a woman's right to get an abortion to whip up their base. If the anti-abortion base didn't insist on attacking this right, you wouldn't hear boo from pro-choice people.

That had nothing to do with why nobody in his own party or otherwise liked his immigration programs -- its because Americans of both parties don't like amnesty for illegals.

I'm not sure where Obama has ever pushed for amnesty. I'm pretty sure his immigration platform has only gone as far as the DREAM Act, which is highly supported by Dems and Indepedents.

I said that in a response to a person who thinks we're going to see back alley abortions in America ever again, and you don't think this is being used to whip up the base? You're either a starry-eyed true believer or simply don't understand how politics works in America.

I like how you stopped reading my post and/or selectively quoted it. Like I said before, pro-choice supporters use attacks on the right to have an abortion, not the act of abortion itself, to whip up their base. Anti-abortion supporters use the act itself to whip up their base.

Long term, that's not true. Short term, he would have been much better off not doing health care.

Random sidebar. My Father would love to retire right now, he's almost 70, and has put in more than enough time as a college professor. He's had a great career of research, doing good for his University, and teaching kids. Why can't he? Because there's literally no way my Mother can get health care coverage. She's had her pancreas removed, she has high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Quite literally, no one will cover her for any rate. She has to wait till she's 65 to be eligible for Medicare. I think that's absurd. We should not be held hostage in life, by insurance companies or risk not having health care availible to us.
