tBB Golf Thread: Our Balls Really Fly

  • Quick question for you guys. I keep hooking my hybrids. It is the only club I do this with. Anyone have any suggestions? I've tried moving the ball in my stance and still a hook. I'm about ready to throw them out the window.

Same problem, I don't carry a hybrid. Although I did finally find one I like at a recent demo days. I also think wrong shafts are an issue with hybrids for a lot of people.

I love my hybrid. One of my favorite clubs in my bag.

Not really sure why you guys are hooking it.

Its a common thing, people either love em or hate em.

  • I'm not that good at golf anyways, but I completely suck with the hybrids. I usually play a small fade, so I'm not sure what I'm doing. The sad part is my 13 year old just kills his perfectly.

Does anyone in here hit an 8.5º driver? I've been using a 9.5º for years and I've finally worked out a lot of my swing except for one thing: I hit the ball really damn high. With all my clubs, really, which is okay with most of them since it's not all that exaggerated (fairway woods, for example, don't bother me with the height I get). My driver, however, really gets up there. I've tried tweaking numerous things about my swing and have had people watch me and we can't figure out how I still get the ball up so high. So, I think I want to try out an 8.5º club. Anyone have any experience with one and can give me some recommendations?

I have a 9.5 degree Titleist 910 driver. Right now I have it set to 8.75 degrees (so very close) and I have it set to a .75 degree draw. I have always hit the ball really high.

Do you hit a cut or a draw? I would recommend a stiffer or heavier shaft if you are hitting a cut.

Sold my old irons to Dicks today and got a Taylormade White Smoke putter. First new putter in 8 years.

Should have got a Scotty! biggrin

The shaft has a big effect on your launch angle. Honestly you would probably get more distance and better roll going with a low launch shaft on a 9.5 degree head. It can get pretty expensive when you start getting into the highend shafts.

I think that is misleading. I think people that buy a driver with a stock shaft are dumb lol. You can get a shaft worth WAY more for usually the same price or a small raise.

  • Try opening your grip. Assuming you are right handed.. how many knuckles (on your right hand) can you see when you grip the club? You should see 2 or 2.5.

I have to think hard when talking to righties since I play golf left handed lol.

A hook isn't a bad problem though... easy to fix. If you were hitting a slice I would be way more concerned. Much harder to fix.

Not all the time but I have hit it out there past 300. My average 3 wood off a tee is probably 285.

At one time I hit my driver consistently around 315 but I am not even approaching that anymore.

You must have exceptional swing speed!

for any of yall thats had acl surgery how long did you have to wait to hit the links? i told my doc i was ready to play during my 2wk check up and he cracked up and said i cant play for several months. needless to say i didnt find that very freeking funny. but im currently about 3.5 wks out from acl reconstuction and miniscus repair and almost got talked into going last wkend but figured i ought to wait a bit more. i figure someones been through this and has info. tia.

Ask Tiger. He tore his ACL. A golf swing can be VERY hard on your knee. Most people don't realize that. I suggest waiting to be safe.

My dad's Titleist D910 is a 9.5º with a regular shaft. My Taylormade Burner (2009) is a 9.5º with the stiffest shaft I could get on the Burner. Both seem to hit the ball about the same height, thought I like the general feel and weight of the D910 better than the Burner (I do miss the stiffer shaft, though).

I LOVE my 910. I have never been a fan of Taylor Made. I like being able to switch the dimensions around with my tool that takes about 30 seconds to use.

Did you have an x flex or a stiff in your taylor made? He may have had a heavier regular flex. Keep in mind that a heavier regular shaft and a lighter stiff shaft are almost the same thing.

Wrong shafts are the problem with a lot of golfers who move past the beginner shaft. People don't realize how important the shaft actually is.

I swing pretty hard. I have tried slowing down my swing actually but I just can't make myself do it.

I have the problem of swinging hard as well... except I no longer hit the ball long.

Ever had your swing speed checked?

No I haven't. I have thought about it but have never got around to it.

If you hit it that far, you should hit on a launch monitor. They are awesome. Will tell you exactly what driver and shaft you should be hitting.

I haven't hit one one in almost 8 years... but I really should. I don't play as much anymore though.

Yeah I really need to get my launch angle checked.

  • Played two rounds of this week. Shot a +4 39 and a -1 34 (par 35) from the whites, still a bit inconsistent on the off the tee box with the Driver. Moving back to the tips next time I play. Still dialing in my distances with my irons, but I am getting better everytime I go out.

Loving all of my new clubs. RBZ 3 wood and 3 Hybrid, the balls just explode off of the face of these things. RAZR X Tours are the best feeling irons I have ever hit, when I hit a pure shot. And my new Taylormade White Smoke putter feels like butter when I am putting.

Got most of my issues in my swing worked out from not golfing for nearly 6 months, just working on becoming consistent with my good swings now. Need to before the Tournaments start popping up around here.

  • Gentlemen - My dad bought an R11 and didn't hit it well so he gave it to me. Problem is that it is a flex shaft. I have been using the same driver for 7 years (R7) and have never re-shafted a driver before. I don't want to spend too much, but need something stiffer than his flex shaft. Any suggestions for a good value?

I am going to Bandon Oregon next week (unrelated) for a golf trip of a lifetime. Wish me luck in golf and wish me luck to live after my wife finds out just how expensive it is going to be.

  • I am not a big shaft expert. I have the regular Fujikura shaft that comes on my R11 and like it fine. It is a stiff shaft though.

You are going to love Bandon Dunes. Both Bandon and Pacific Dunes are incredible courses. Best place I have ever played golf.

I played yesterday and shot okay. I struggled on the front but then got it going on the back.

What, you prefer a smaller shaft? lol Sorry, I had to.

I think I am just going to go to GolfSmith and listen to their guys. I don't think I am good enough (12) for it to matter much more than need something that is stiffer.

My buddy who was out there last year actually likes Old MacDonald better than Bandon Dunes. Also, the par 3 course opened (Preserve) so that will be fun.

We are playing - Bandon Preserve 1x
    Pac Trails 2x
    Bandon Dunes 1x
    Old Mac 1x
    Bandon Trails 1x

I didn't get to play Old MacDonald. I was only there for a day and we played Bandon and Pacific once each.
