tBB Golf Thread: Our Balls Really Fly

Anyone got any tips to hit your driver higher?

Have you always had a problem getting it high or just since you switched to the X-stiff shaft? I tried an x-stiff shaft once and I couldn't get any launch.

Also how are you liking the Burner 2.0? I almost bought one today but j am waiting on your verdict.

Tee the ball up just a tad higher, and move up in your stance. If you are having trouble getting the ball up its probably because you have the ball too close to the middle of your stance. What degree club face is your Taylormade? I have to use a 10.5 because I had that problem as well. I know some people that can play lights out with a 9.5, but I just can't get the ball up.

There was a time when I had a 9.0 but I am not as good now. My swing has changed so much because of my back. I use a 10.5 now.

  • I play with a 9.5º and I have no problems getting the ball up when I need too. Widen your stance a couple of inches and put the ball 1 inch in front of your forward armpit, and that should get the ball back up.

You could also be coming down at the ball too, I can't really tell you what you need to do without seeing your swing. Right now I'm just guess at the usual problems most golfers have.

I use a 10.5 Nike and have a low launch but last week I noticed that if my grip was strong but relaxed, I could get the higher launch angle. I think when the hands are tense, they will not release at the ball and thus cause a more downward angle at the ball.

Yep that will do it too. On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is where you're gripping but the club falls right out, and 10 where you're gripping as hard as you possibly can. You should be at about 5 or 6 with your driver.

It's strange that the more relaxed I am, the more smooth and strong the swing feels. When I try for extra distance, I grip harder and the result is totally bad.

I switched back to just Stiff.

I really like it, it gets soooooo much run on the fairway. Yesterday, I hit it on a par 5 and it landed right in font of an elevated bunker and it hopped right over.

    It's a 9.5, and I haven't ever been a high-hitter, and it doesn't go very high.

I really like it, my only con would be, it feels weird as hell when you hit it. I can never tall if I hit it well or not.

It's good for working the ball.

    It is getting good distance.

    Yeah, 9.5 for me.

Yeah, I've really been working on steepening my swing plane. It used to be so flat that I would hit a low hook.

    Swing is in progress.

I was in Dicks yesterday and damn near bought one. I didn't realize they made them white like the R11's. I know the color doesn't really matter but I think it looks awesome. I am more than likely going to get it.

That's a very common misconception. Too hit the ball further, you don't have to swing harder, in fact I've seen people who have tried to swing faster, and end up actually having a slower club head speed.

It's really all about leverage and lag in your swing, that's where all your distance is.

Watch this video, it gives you an idea of what you have to do in order to get lag in your swing, it's not my video. But my swing is pretty similar.

This is pretty hard to do, you need to have a pretty good consistent swing that's on plane. You're going to have to have a lot of practice as well if you're going to try this. Out of all the things I've tried to put into my swing, this was by far the most difficult to implement right.

I have a "tens unit" that the VA gave me to manage pain in my knees. It gives little electric shocks that help deal with pain. talk to your Doc.

  • Just went and hit drivers. Down to the Titelist D2/D3 (can't decide if I want the extra backspin) or the R11.

  • I shot 82 with 5 double bogies and decided on the spot it was time to replace my old Titleist 981s. Bought the Callaway X-22 Tours, I can't do the offset of the regulars but I like these irons a lot.

    TXA2009

  • I play with the x-22 tours myself. I love them because they look very traditional over the top, but they are anything but through contact. Longest iron I've ever owned.

  • Played my 3rd round with the new Callaway Razr irons I bought awhile back....starting to hit them more consistently. Anyone else play them? Thoughts? My old set was +1" shafts and 3 degree upright, but when I got measured for this set two different Pro's told me to go with only 1 degree upright? May be what I am getting use to now?

I'm playing these as well, love these irons. Extremely long, easy to work the ball, and the grooves are very sharp, and have a lot of grip when I want the ball to take one hop and stop on the green.

  • RE: Burner 2.0 - I got last year's superfast off eBay for $115, still in factory plastic. It's taking time to get used to it because its so damn light, but I almost drove a slight dogleg right, 335 yard par 4 on Saturday.

I took a drop around the dogleg bc I couldn't find my ball and didn't see it come down. It was up just off the left side of the green. I thought it was a joke.

    PTCcock195

  • The SuperFast kinda has a weird face, in the sense that it is HUGE and the sweet spot is more to right.

    I crushed a few yesterday

That's why I love my Cobra drivers, the sweet spot on those things are HUGE, but directly in the middle. Taylormade are a tad longer, like 5 yards further. If I hit the ball a little bit off center, it still feels as pure as it would if it had hit smack dab in the middle of the face.

I don't think I will ever switch from Cobra woods. I am starting to look into Callawy X-Forged Wedges. Titliest won't make the square or C-grooves anymore, just the V Grooves. I'm not going to be playing in any professional tournaments, so I don't really care about the USGA rules limiting the grooves.

I have two Vokey wedges with the C-Grooves and I get so, so, so much more grip and control with those than the V-Grooves, I'm not going to be buying any. The X-Forged wedges still come in C-Groove form.
