what nfl rule/penalty do you hate most?

  • I teeter between roughing the passer (its a violent game, get over it) and intentional grounding (you can spike it to stop the clock, but can't throw the ball to nowheresville inside the tackles). What say you?

  • Holding calls that are away from the play that don't have any hinderance on the play whatsoever.

Obvious answer is the hard hitting penalty

Lol, and they call a holding penalty away from the play right on cue

  • I don't like the 5-yard chuck penalty. I think the rules are skewed in the offense's favor in enough other ways, so allowing defensive backs to jam receivers downfield would be a good way to even things out a little bit without risking player safety.

  • Roughing the passer and unnecessary roughness because they're all bs judgement calls

I've never watched many (if any) games from the 70s and earlier, but I was watching an NFL Network special on rules that changed the game and they were showing how DBs used to be able to just throw WRs down at the line of scrimmage and basically nullified the passing game 100% (showing mostly the Steel Curtain). Was it as boring to watch as that sounds?

I don't like the soccer-esque flopping, but to be fair, they're usually the smallest guys on the field and are in a precarious position to get hit and obliterated when their in their follow through. Surprised more don't get broken in half honestly.

  • The salary cap by far (if this counts). I miss the true dynasties. I miss the days when the 49ers had 3 pro bowl nose tackles just because they could...

Next would be any fey Brady rule to protect the QB or the 'defenseless player'. I miss the kill-shot.

Here's a good explanation of how football changed when the bump and run was outlawed:

"Under the old rules, defenders were allowed to make contact with a receiver until the ball was in the air. Defenders weren’t permitted to hold the receiver, but they were permitted to bump him. Lions cornerback Lem Barney invented the bump-and-run technique and it gave birth to a legion of cornerbacks that were big and physical enough to come up and support against the run, and athletic and fast enough to run with wide receivers and jam them as the two ran side by side. Shortly after the five-yard chuck rule was instituted, the face of the cornerback position underwent dramatic change. Small, quick types popped up everywhere; cornerbacks such as the Browns’ Hanford Dixon and Frank Minniefield. They were exempt from supporting against the run; just mirror the receiver and defend against the pass. The face of the quarterback position changed, too. Against bump and run, quarterbacks couldn’t throw to a spot because they didn’t know where that spot would be or when the receiver would get there. Against bump and run, you had to have a quarterback with an arm strong enough to get the ball there now, which is to say as soon as he saw the receiver had gained the slightest separation from the defensive back. The big, strong-armed quarterbacks of today could’ve played in that game, but the finesse quarterbacks of today, the Drew Brees types, would’ve struggled."

  • hit on a defenseless receiver is comeplete garbage. i feel bad for every safety in the league. they basically want you to let the guy catch the ball and turn upfield before you can touch them. ronnie lott and george atkinson would have been fined so much in the modern nfl that theyd have quit

  • I love muff, but how come in football you can't advance one on a punt return. I don't understand the point of that rule.

Maybe somebody can point out why that rule is neccessary, otherwise let them score on a muff!

  • Targeting

It's as if the NFL doesn't even care that the laws of Physics prohibit DB's from adhering to this homasex rule.

    Launching

DB can't leave his feet to make a stop but the receiver CAN leave his feet to make a catch. WTF?????

    Hitting a Defenseless Receiver

If the NFL really cared about player safety then they would penalize the QB for throwing over the middle into coverage.

All of these rules were implemented so that skinny jeans wearing fantasy football players could play make believe and act like they're God damned General Managers.
