LL Cool J, Beastie Boys or Run DMC... all were on the same label all came out around the same time...
I am a fan of all 3, had a debate over this with some friends of mine who play in a band.... me personally am partial to the Beastie Boys but really can't say who is better

Personally I think LL Cool J had the best raps, Run DMC had the most influence, and The Beastie Boys had the most cross over appeal.
I can think of more LL cool J songs than I can Beatie Boys or Run DMC.

Valid point.... each of us had good points on why we thought who was better... me with the Beastie Boys was what you said their wide range of fans... but LL had some sick lyrics. And Run DMC was just a big influence in the hip hop game

LL had the best lyrics, but probably have to go with Run DMC considering the influence they had. Mamma Said Knock You Out by LL is one of my favorite rap songs.

As far as talent, it's the Beastie Boys and it's not even close. If you have ever seen them in concert, it's something else. Plus, they have album after album of hits over decades.

Love all 3. But Beastie Boys is my choice. Sustained success, album after album of awesome quality work. One of my favorite bands. These guys are the ones that found Q-tip if im not mistaken. Get It Together is one of my alltime favorite songs

Beastie's are so talented. They did an all instrumental album called the Mix Up. Awesome. Put that in on a road trip.

Wow, I wouldn't put LL anywhere near Run DMC and the B-Boys. Run DMC put rap on MTV back in the 80's and the Beastie Boys had the first rap ablum to sell a million.
But if you look at their careers, I have to go with the Beastie Boys. Each album has been unique from the last and their videos have been some of the best in the business.

You would have to break this debate down into sections:
1) Hip hop (which is a culture and not the music)
2) Rap
Beastie Boys/Run DMC changed the culture. They ARE hip hop.
LL changed the entire rap scene back then.
IMO, they all were equally important to the rise of the hiphop scene of today.
