why is texas a&m taking so many receivers

  • I would love to know how the hell they are allowed to take like 37 players with a 25 player limit rule. I have never understood why we have this rule if people just piss all over it.

    I understand why UGA is able to do it and I'm not sure how A&M's numbers are. UGA had about as many scholarship players as USC did this year.

    I never understood why they gave you so much grief. I've always gotten along with you but you had a rough couple of days no?

    Still I can't understand why they are allowed to take so many. If they want to spend them on WR's I don't get it either. They should be taking more OL'men but it is Sumlin. I guess when you recruit about 37 kids expecting to sign then you can recruit whatever the hell you want.

    It's because you can "borrow" from both the past and the future in some cases.

    Also sounds like some kids won't qualify academically. That part I really don't get. If they aren't qualifying, then they aren't committed, and coaches should tell them that.

    I thought that was the whole point of making this 25 limit rule though. It forced coaches to be more careful with who they selected. Once that 25 limit rule was put into place, one of the reasons that they said they did it in the SEC, was to keep coaches from signing kids that obviously wouldn't make the grades.

    Edit: I made a thread about this a few weeks ago and nobody could honestly give an answer that made much sense. I understand why UGA can because they had like 75 or 76 scholly kids this year, which makes their season that much more impressive. I guess there is no reason to complain, because you can still only have 85 scholly players come kick off next season. I guess it doesn't really matter.

    Yeah but they would still sign even if they don't end up making their grades. They aren't ruled ineligible academically in February when they sign. That wouldn't come until they graduate which certainly isn't in February.

    Yeah, you're right. I should have said enrolling, rather than signing. That must be what it applies to.

    The 25 rule is supposed to be applied to "signing" not enrolling. That is why I said that it was supposed to make coaches more careful about who they signed when it came to academics.

    The NCAA is hardlined about the 85 number so I guess it really doesn't matter. It's on the kids to do the math and know the rules. If they get screwed in the end, it's nobody's fault but their own.

    we do lose 4 Sr WR & 1 Sr TE

    plus, although i am unsure, i do not think Thomas Johnson is with the team next year.

    i think the WR commits who sign, and do not win a starting position, will red shirt

  • I would venture to guess that most schools don't have 10 receivers on their roster. A&M is taking 10 in one class.

    I think they should just sign 50 players. Screw it. If the NCAA doesn't care, why not?

    You'd venture to being wrong as well. Most teams have 10 WR on their 85 man roster.

    You would be correct. Just did some quick searches. Found some teams with 10, 11 and 12. Nothing above 12, though.

    Still, that is a lot of receivers for 1 class. Again, since the NCAA doesn't care, take 50.

    Bama has 14, OU 16, A&M 19. Hell LSU has 17, IDK why, they only use 2 of them. The NCAA does care, don't exceed 85 and don't exceed 25 come signing day. So far A&M is still within those boundaries. If all the top WR talent in the nation wanted to come play in Sumlins offense with Johnny Heisman, I wouldn't turn them down either.

  • Griffin won't qualify so they currently have 5 big WRs committed and 2 slots plus Echols Luper who could play WR or DB. I'd probably expect one current WR commit to bail before signing day. When its all said and done they are probably losing 4-5 WRs this year and they only return 1 starter (Mike Evans). They consistently go 4-5 wide and Sumlin ideally likes to rotate WRs to keep them fresh in the hurry up with as many as 8+ in the rotation.

    I don't think it's going to be a problem...

    shrug Georgia Tech? Only had two WR's with 10 or more catches (another had 8, the next two had 3 and 2).
