  • Why? Fertile recruiting ground... good pieces already in place. I will be curious to see where he ends up. Wonder if it was the $$$

    Probably waiting for Calhoun's job.

And don't think location, recruiting grounds, matters that much in basketball as it does it football.

  • plus Chicago hoops scene is not what i would want as my recruiting base. you would have to take 5 showers a day.

Maybe not in Michigan, but the state of Indiana disagrees. Chicago kids don't stay in state. Have always left for bigger and better programs.

What he said. The HS coaches fight with AAU coaches for the $$$

  • UConn is not much of a better job than Illinois if its even better at all. Im surprised by this move but hes only 34. As long as he has VCU right around the tourney every other year or so hes going to be the top guy out there. Guess hes banking on something like UCLA in a year or two

  • You have to wonder if the handling of Bruce Weber or the Cincinnati football coach turning down the AD he used to work for (Mike Thomas went from Cincinnati to Illinois this year) has something to do with it.

Sure, 2 championships since 99 and you can't compare the amount of pro between the two teams.

  • How attractive a job is is not solely related to the amount of recent success its had though obviously thats an important piece. Illinois was ranked as the #13 most valuable job by Forbes, UConn doesn't crack the top 20. UConns success as a program is built entirely around one ridiculously good coach. Up until 1980 they were playing the likes of UMass, Holy Cross, and Delaware every year and were nothing as a program.

As far as conference stability goes Illinois has a huge advantage being a member of the most powerful conference and swimming in Big 10 money. Who the hell knows where UConn ends up conference wise. Illinois has better fan support and while Assembly Hall isn't nice its a better situation than the bizarre combo of a crap on campus arena and a crap off campus arena UConn has. The Chicago recruiting base is a big plus in Illinois favor as well.

I don't know which way UConn goes once Calhoun is gone but it is far from a given that they remain some powerhouse.

  • Recruiting area doesn't mean much in basketball especially with AAU basketball, let me know if Jabari Parker goes to ILL next year. And UConn building a brand new 30 million dollar practice faciily.

And who cares of who they were before Calhoun, UConn is now a powerhouse and will put kids into the NBA and that is all most kids care about.

  • Groce from Ohio next on the list

  • Sounds like ILL isn't that great of a job after all.

  • Here is an article explaining what I said above. The word is out on Mike Thomas and he is going to have a tough time in Illinois. He got turned down many times for the football job and basketball has been a debacle.
