Thoughts on no classification in HS ball??

  • Indiana had a bill recently get shot down that wanted to do away with classifications and go back to the old way... Supposedly they are going to do a city-hall kind of forum... Which way does everyone side on this? If someone would provide link, it would be appreciated.

    Keep the classifications.

I don't think a small school in northern Michigan should have to compete for a championship with a large Detroit public school, let alone one of the large catholic schools.

  • Tough call. I would love to see only 1 state championship, but to see the kids from the small schools get to celebrate is also nice

OldOaken247 on twitter..... I say a lot of stuff you wont care about.

If you're the state champion, and there are 8 other state champions, you are not the state champion.

I'm old school but I liked no classifications. If you have to have them then just do something like have a "MEGA" and "everyone else." That way the giant schools can play each other as can all of the regular or smaller schools.

I'm a coach in Indiana now and I am torn. While i grew up with class b-ball like most of you, there are a lot of benefits for the smaller schools under the class system.

(I teach at a bigger school)

I know where you are coming from. Scroll up and see my earlier post about "Mega" vs the other schools. Interesting how you feel. Thanks for the contribution.

  • I know a lot of people here in Indiana like the idea and mystique of one state championship, and I myself am interested I'm the idea too but I'm not sure it would work this day and age. You would have a lot of small school complainers after they get whacked by city boys every year in sectionals. But there would also be small schools like Luers that would be able to compete. I would be for giving it a trial run and seeing how it goes.

why not take the "champions" from each class and do a 4 or 8 team playoff with them?

Now that is a solid idea. Have class winners and then have an overall champion tournament.

  • Living in South Bend(Granger) all my life, and Valparaiso for a few years, I attended high school games even after I graduated HS. I stopped attending games(as did most of my friends) when the went to the class system. It just doesn't have the same feel...even during the regular season.

"Strap on" is "No parts" spelled backwards...coincidence--- I think not!

  • Jersey has a "tournament of chanpions" in basketball which matches up all the winners of each "state". Works really well

  • Bad idea. A school of 300 K-12 competing against a school with 2,000 10-12? No thanks.

Sure, but how do you get there? 1 tournament for all or a class tournament where the winners then face-off in a super tournament?

That's what makes it that much better when a small school wins it all. The entire state gets swept up in playoffs and the underdog becomes a fan favorite. It's not going to happen often, but it would happen.
