Who is ready for B1G conference play?

  • I think that this past week is typical for what we are going to see for the rest of the regular season.

Agreed, I still like Michigan or Indiana to finish first.

I'm going with Michigan. Crean is a great recruiter, but from an in game coaching perspective I think there's quite a few coaches in conference better than him. I would include Beilein as one of those. He's done pretty good with average at best talent until the past couple years in my opinion. I know Tom Crean made a Final 4, but Dwyane Wade was the only reason that Marquette team made it there and then Kansas bitch slapped them back to Milwaukee.

  • Minnesota really struggling as of late.

Yeah, they really are struggling. I don't shed a tear however. I still remember a cold winter day in 1993(?) where Voshon Leonard and company destroyed the Hoosiers.

  • Minnesota is digging themselves a pretty big hole and with the strength of the conference this could go down hill for them pretty quickly. I was at the game today in Madison and I don't understand why the Gophers didn't go to Andre Hollins more. He was the only player in the game that looked like he could score when he wanted to. He had 13 shots but should have had more.

As far as the Badgers go.......yuck. They are so offensively challenged. In my mind they need to live with the freshman mistakes and let Dekker and Marshall play more because of the potential they have to put points on the score board. I got to say I am disappointed with the UW seniors on the front line. I thought they would step up a little bit knowing that this is it for them, particularly Berggren. He just gets lost out there offensively too much and doesn't demand the ball. At least Evans will try to take over and be aggressive, but he can't shoot and is a turnover waiting to happen. I give the team credit for being gritty as hell and winning some tough games, but they are so tough to watch and if it weren't for my emotional attachment I would not go out of my way to catch their games on tv and even if I found a game on tv I'd probably change the channel.

  • Good to see you around and I certainly appreciate the in-depth post. They went away from Hollins in the IU game as well, especially in the 2nd half. They just may not yet be ready for Prime Time in the conference this season.

I am used to the Badgers style of play at this point. It is what makes the BIG conference so interesting and unique to watch. Styles and matchups make games...

I agree. The different styles is what makes the BIG interesting and I do appreciate how the Badgers play. Tough defense and efficient offense that limits turnovers and takes good shots is great and all. The problem is I am used to players like Kirk Penney, Devin Harris, Mike Wilkinson, Alando Tucker, Kam Taylor, Brian Butch, Trevon Hughes, and Jordan Taylor playing in the system. Those players were skilled and even though the system slows things down it was exciting to watch those players play in it. This years team just does not have the skill. There are definitely a few players that could be great, but at the moment they just may be a little too young. Dekker is going to be a stud and I think George Marshall will end up being a really good player.

I have not seen much in terms of their recruiting for next year. Is Ryan going after higher ranked players or does he tend to just find the best parts still to fit into his system?

He's actually gone after some very high ranked players before they blew up. Bo was in very early on Semi Ojeleye and Kyle Washington and it looked like they would be in it till the end, then all of the sudden at the end of their recruitments after saying the Badgers would be in it and had a great chance of getting them UW was left off the final list. The same thing happened with the recruitment of Myke Henry (Illinois) and Chasson Randle (Stanford). Bo is usually really good at identifying talent early and offering like Sam Dekker, the other guys I just mentioned. So he's gone after high level talent that fits the system as well. The only high level player I think he missed out on and offered too late was Matt Thomas, a SG from Onalaska, WI. Bo offered a little too late for Matt's liking and I believe he has family in Iowa, so he ended up committing to Iowa State.

  • Yep. Tomorrow we find out if Indiana and Michigan can both handle their business before rolling up their sleeves Saturday night. If they beat each other up over the next few weeks it sure looks like your Bucks are ready to pounce on another conference title.

I still like the Wolverines the most. OSU has the most dynamic scorer in the conference, but they're too reliant on Thomas. I like Michigan's balance and I think that will be the key that gets them the title. IU is obviously very good as well, but I think when it comes to pure coaching ability I think he would be no better than the 5th best coach in conference, so I like Michigan just a bit more. Just my opinion.

  • I think that eventually the size of Indiana's guards, Hulls and Yogi, will be a big problem. It almost cost them on Sunday in my opinion. This Saturday I have no idea if they put Oladipo on Burke or GRIII. Then who guards the greek kid? Etc. Match-up problems all over in that game on both sides.

After I had gotten over Wisconsin's loss to Purdue IU has to go and lose at home to Ohio State. Just brought back the sickening feeling I was having Sunday, and then some.
