Analysis: NCAA Hammers Penn State

We provide analysis of the sanctions handed down against Penn State. Plus, we look at the short- and long-term future for PSU football and the impact on the Big Ten as well.

  • This is indeed a great, objective write-up, Steve.

  • Awesome read Steve. Dear State fans: take a little advice from a Bama fan. Stick by your team. Love them and support them and be proud of the players who are willing to carry on the tradition. We were hit hard in the early 2000's and slumped down to a 3-9 season. We had an inept coach, no real recruiters, a low 4 star was something to brag about signing, but our stadium remained full. Our gear still sold in stores. Even as Auburn went on a nice tear and rubbed it in our face we believed.

A program with such great tradition and legacy won't be stopped. Y'all will be a shell of yourselves for 5 or 6 years but it will come back. Penn State is college football. Y'all have a rabid fan base, you're a national brand, and even though its a dark hour you can't judge the whole institution by an aggregious cover up by a few. I wish y'all a speedy recovery and I hope you at least beat Ohio State each year! Roll Tide my northern friends!

  • Awesome write up Steve.

It is always the innocent who are punished in any scandal. USC, OSU, PSU, etc. Impossible to go back and time and punished the uncovered offenses. Sad to see but the only real way it can be done.

Best of luck to PSU. I hope their fan base continues to support the team. The kids supporting their university deserve it. So does BoB.

  • " It’s unfortunate all of that greatness has been swept aside because of his inaction on the Sandusky matter.

The school removed Paterno’s statue from outside Beaver Stadium."

Do you think they should have left the statue outside the stadium and not vacated his wins? It's a tragedy that this happened, but we should not feel bad for Joe Paterno or his legacy. What's really unfortunate is that he could have stopped this early on and chose not to (don't believe the Paterno family or Spanier denials) so he deserves to have all of his greatness "swept aside". That's a small price to pay for what he did or didn't do.

  • Here's a little "perspective" for the PSU fan-base clamoring about how unjust and excessive the NCAA sanctions are. OSU took a 1 year bowl ban and lost 9 schollies over three years with the loss of a revered coach for not practicing his speeches.

PSU received a 4 year bowl, loses 40 schollies over a 4 year span and the loss of a revered coach for, essentially, the same conduct (not saying JT cover-up is even in the same ball park, but not practice what he preached).

Basically, PSU received punishment 4X more harsh than OSU. To me, every PSU fan that screams "unjust" is saying that a football program that allowed 52 counts of child rape is NOT even 4X worse than young adults selling necklaces and receiving free tattoos.

It just seems indicative of exactly the "cultural change" Emmert was speaking about. Some things must be sacrosanct and a football GAME should not be one of them.

I didn't mention the money because these particular fans don't seem to care too much about it either.

  • They were hit pretty hard. I know last year I was sick, as a Buckeye fan ever day I woke up and waited to hear more crap about our program and even though Penn State deserved what they got the fans lose again and that hurts..As fans most years our last words are wait til next year !!! Now they will be down for awhile!!!

    ohiobigtee

  • Thankd God Emmert has the jollies to come down hard on the institutional rot that existed at PSU for ten plus years. The Paterno family is acting very badly. They better shut up and get all that pension money stashed in a Swiss bank account. As to a "rush for judgemen" claim, that is hardley the case with the ex-FBI Director heading up a six month investigation. With all the emails, it was a slam dunk. Very sad but good for PSU to get it behind them and start a new day.

    Old Buckeye

  • I go back and forth with it but I still cannot get my arms around punishing current and future athletes and students for the actions of those who are no longer a part of a university. At Penn State or elsewhere. To say "Penn State" must be punished is hard to define for me. Penn State is simply a collection of buildings. It's identity is certainly shaped by its traditions, but only to a point. Any organization is ultimately defined by those currently representing it. Everyone associated with this scandal has been removed from the university, so who exactly are you punishing? Sometimes I think the fairer thing to do is simply to fine the hell out of an institution, let's say $200M in this case, and to give those involved a show cause penalty consistent with the crime. That way innocent athletes, students, alumni and fans do not pay for the mistakes of a few.

  • Thanks for the succinct and accurate write up. While i agree with the NCAA sanctions, they missed one group of culprits: the PSU BOT. Remember the Freeh Report was commissioned by the BOT to get the facts but also to deflect attention from the BOT's failure to supervise any of these criminal conspirators--Spanier, Curley, Paterno. Where was the oversight of the BOT? That's their job. One trustee was told of the Sandusky investigations in 1998 (and later), but apparently did not inform the remainder of the Board. How can that be tolerated?

IMHO the entire BOT should be forced to resign in stages for their own failure to monitor their own employees. They clearly were part of the problem of not knowing what they minions were doing or not wanting to know.

  • I agree with Tha RizzO. Give the new coach all the time he needs. He knew he was taking over a train wreck. He didn't know the train wreck was going to kill 50,000 people. PSU should give him a 7-8 year contract. Let him get through this disaster, and give him a huge raise if he can come through this with his brain intact. Pity this poor man. Give him a break. Root for PSU when they are not playing OSU. They need to be strong again the give the B1G some cred again.

The Freeh Report specifically stated that BoT was derilict in their duties to monitor the activities of the President and AD. I was surprised at how scathing his language was in addressing the same BoT that hired him and his firm. I think that speaks to the integrity of the overall report; he pulled no punches.

I do agree that there should be a blood-letting in the BoT. They failed to do their jobs and facilitated an environment where Spanier's opinions were rubber stamped, therefore, they should be relieved of their duties. This scandal is going to cost the university 100's of millions before it is over and heads should roll.

  • Penn State got a raw deal IMO. There were cries that "something must be done," and since you can't do anything to Sandusky and Spanier and Paterno (ie: those actually involved), we'll just go after anybody. Contrary to what a poster above said, the "football program" didn't allow 52 counts of abuse, a few people who were associated in varying degrees with the football program did. There was no misconduct among players, coaches, facutly, boosters etc in relation to the football program. People that agree with this penalty are empowering an already too-powerful NCAA to do anything it pleases, whether they have jurisdiction or not. When the NCAA shows up in Columbus the next time to investigate selling sugared beverages on campus and the harm it does to children in Ohio Stadium, remember your position this day.

Some say that the PSU football program had become too powerful and insulated, and that's what allowed this to happen, and what needs to be and hopefully will be corrected by these actions. Well, if that is the cause of the crime, then there are many other programs among the 120 FBS schools that suffer the same situation, and my beloved Buckeyes certainly are among those. I fear what the NCAA will do going forward.....though we know they aren't interested in doing too much when it comes to free cars and suits and $100,000 payments and paying recruiting services and, well you get the point. They are selective and arbitrary in meting out justice. You don't give that kind of organization this type of boost in it's power.

And notice what a chicken-s*** outfit the NCAA is. They effectively gave Penn State a death sentence for a few years, but rather than having the cajones to actually do it, and accepting the consequences of their actions, they decided it was more important not to put a hole in the schedule of 8 other Big10- teams for the next year or two.

It's all about the dollars and the power, not doing what is right. The NCAA better account for every last friggin penny of that $60million.

I do agree the BOT has to go.

  • I am sorry, but they got what they deserved. I feel bad for the student athletes that had nothing to do with this, but the higher ups caused this to continue when they could have done something to help stop it, including the head coach Paterno! Anyone against some type of punishment is not looking at the victims of what happened!

Thanks for both missing and making my point. The punishment needs to be applied to the guilty, not the convenient. Creating more innocent victims doesn't solve anything, but I guess it makes some feel better.

I agree that the BoT should also be held accountable. But who do they answer to? Probably not the NCAA. It's a state university, so my guess would be the governor of the state. Is the governor the only one who can force them to resign?

What about the AAU? Can they threaten to drop PSU as a member school, unless the BoT is replaced? Would they?

    edm83

  • Regarding the BOT my first thought after reading the Freeh report was the potential for civil litigation against INDIVIDUAL members of the BOT. The final outcome, probably years to come, will be studied in law schools for decades.

Right with you on every statement except that last one!

However, I am of the feeling that the NCAA should have stayed out of this. For starters, where did PSU realize a "competitive advantage" as a result of the wrong done? Absent a direct violation of NCAA rules, they should have no say in it.

Let the criminal justice system deal with Spanier, Curley, and anybody else (including McQueary) who had knowledge but did not ensure that authorities were notified. The players, students and fans who will suffer the most were not even remotely connected to the crimes. No justice in that.
