Big Ten Legends: The Quarterbacks

We assess the quarterback units in the Big Ten's Legends Division. Returners include Iowa's James Vandenberg, Michigan's Denard Robinson and Nebraska's Taylor Martinez.

  • Thanx, good article.

    Sonofly

  • Thanks for the articles on the QBs in both divisions Steve. I enjoyed getting up to speed on all 12 teams.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

  • Thanks for the comments, we will have a ton on all 12 teams as spring winds down. I just thought the QB spot deserved a breakout.

  • Hands down Michigan takes this one

  • That was a very good summary. Thanks for putting it together. As a Nebr fan I sure wish that we could have seen something of Martinez last weekend; that is THE point of concern (has he improved) for this season IMO.

  • Granted I am a Michigan State fan, but I will never understand Denard hype. He is my favorite player by far not to wear an MSU jersey. If you look at his numbers against BigTen contenders they are absolutely terrible. Sure he can put 400 yards of total offense up against a team like Eastern, but when he is playing the Michigan State's of the world he can't do anything. Granted he got Michigan to 10 wins last year which is great and he deserves a lot of credit, I just am not sold. I suppose it might be because the three times I saw him play live it was against MSU (In three seasons he is 26 for 63 for 338 yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions, just over 3 yards a carry and an obscene amount of sacks) but I am just not impressed at all.

I am not comparing him to anyone in the division(Maxwell, who is obviously not proven) but I just see a lot of unwarranted hype (besides the whole 10 games thing). He reminds me of the Tim Tebow hype.

He also set numerous NCAA records his sophomore year, and while I agree MSU has done the best job containing him, its hard to argue the fact that hes a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Now that he has learned Borges offense it'll be interesting to see how he performs. Borges has said time and time again that its really year 2 that any QB fully grasps his schemes. A lot of Denards throws were forced last year, it will be interesting to see if that changes this year.

Well of course you don't understand it if you just take the games against Michigan State into account. Of course the guy has his limitations, you can put together a reel of all of the throws he makes off of his back foot or into double covered receivers and just scratch your head. But he can just do things that other people can't, and he does it with such joy that he's just fun to watch. And it's not all against bad defenses. Between Nebraska and Ohio State he was 25-35 with 4 touchdowns and only 1 interception, and these were two defenses that Kirk Cousins had trouble moving the ball against mightily. Yes, home vs road thing but that can only make up some of the difference. He's exciting and he can do special things when the light goes on, that's why people love him.

As a Husker fan I think we might be looking at the last season we see Martinez starting. I think either Brion Carnes or Tommy Armstrong will be our starter in 2013.

I agree with you 100%. Even though he ripped my Huskers a new one last year I am not sold on him being an elite college quarterback.

He plays well against defenses that have a hard time containing a mobile quarterback. Nebraska just can't figure out how to stop scrambling quarterbacks. The result? Michigan rips Nebraska to shreds last year. Iowa, on the other hand, seems to have very few problems defending a mobile quarterback. The result? Iowa beats Michigan. I think Denard's success depends on who he's playing.
