Helwagen: Post-Spring Top 25

  • I did not set up the Twitter account and never gave it another thought. I guess I need to find out how to change it. If that's the worst thing I ever do in my life, I think I'll be OK. But, hey man, keep me honest, I'm a big boy, I can take it.

Did the Lantern get it wrong or is your title dependent on your audience?

  • Talk my way out of what ... I have a dual role ... I cover Ohio State for Bucknuts and Big Ten for 247. I am no longer considered the editor of Bucknuts in a technical sense. I think Dave Biddle now has that title. I don't think any of us are hung up on titles ... why is this such a big deal?

I will keep grinding. Follow if you want to follow, don't if you don't want to.

What was it Bonnie Raitt once sang? I can't make you love me ... if you don't.

you should let your readers know before you write a Big Ten article that you are also a writer for Bucknuts and have been for years, since you are all about full disclosure, now.

You guys are reaaaaaaallly reaching here. Him being from Bucknuts has no bearing on anything.
I like the idea of a B1G board. tBB is unbearable because of all the SEC posters. It's like they speak a completely different language.
That said, if the centerpiece of this board is a writer who upon being accused of using his chats to push Buckeye topics flat out denied it, only for it to be discovered that he was using dual accounts to ask the questions about the Buckeyes that he wanted to talk about, and who thinks that a three year period with 2 big ten titles, 2 final fours, and 1 national runner up is "disappointing" I'll pass. Those chats should have just been "Here is an article on why I think the Buckeyes are the bestest" instead of pretend chats.

But being mad because of his Twitter or Linkedin profile? Pfft.

did you read the article this thread was started for? he has tOSU at 12th in the nation. for nothing. and he does have a little bit of a history of being a total OSU blowhard.

I don't like Kiffin, but he sure can coach. Ten is too high for MSU...they'll have at least one loss before conference play starts. I don't see Iowa as a top 25 team, but their schedule is so damn easy they might move up as the season progresses. Thirteen might be a little high for Wisconsin, but the easy schedule will help. Michigan deserves the pre-season ranking, but it will be fun to watch them drop quickly with loses to Alabama and Notre Dame. This will be Notre Dame's and Brian Kelly's break out year with ten or possibly eleven wins against a tough schedule.

Keep telling yourself that, does it get old after a while?

Yes I did. But where are you going to get a B1G person without any sort of bias? Even Jack would over rate MSU.

I think you've more than pointed out my background.

Regarding the idea of seeding the chats, I think the record reflects accurately that the alias I used -- simply in an effort to get the chats off the ground -- asked questions about most if not all of the schools in the Big Ten.

I've said time and again, I should not have taken such a short cut. I was trying to build something positive for ALL Big Ten fans. To say I did that simply to prop Ohio State is incorrect.

I'm on record with my predictions for all Big Ten teams ... record, division placement and bowl bid.

Ohio State was like an entirely different team this spring. Could they go 6-6 again? Sure, anything is possible. But I think Miller has potential to be special.

As I picked their games, this was what I came back with:

    Miami (Ohio), win
    Central Fllorida, win
    California, win
    UAB, win
    at Michigan State, loss
    Nebraska, win
    at Indiana, win
    Purdue, win
    at Penn State, win
    Illinois, win
    at Wisconsin, loss
    Michigan, win

That's 10-2. I think most rational thinking people would have them in this vicinity. Maybe they lose at PSU, but I just don't think that happens.

People attack me for rating them 12th. Schlabach has them 17th in his latest ratings. That ain't so eggregious as you want to make it out to be.

The last 3 years, the No. 12 teams have gone 9-3, 10-2 and 9-3.

    Again, I'm showing my math.

MSU, 10-2 with losses at Michigan and Wisconsin
Michigan, 9-3 with losses to Alabama, at Nebraska and at Ohio State
Wisconsin, 10-2 losses at Nebraska and at Penn State (they doink another one off besides Neb. somewhere, may as well be PSU)
Nebraska, 9-3 with losses at OSU, MSU and Iowa

    That's how I see it.

Helwagen is also a contributor to Bucknuts.com.

I hope that gives you the full disclosure you are craving (ha ha, just kidding). Transparency is good.

I just changed my bio on Twitter to:

I totally disagree with your opinion on Notre Dame. With their brutal schedule, I think they'll be lucky to be bowl eligible.
