ACC considering 24-hour TV network

  • The ACC is considering joining the ranks of conferences with their own television network: inspired by the oodles and oodles of cash the Big Ten is raking in thanks to the Big Ten Network, the conference has created a panel and hired a consultant to discuss the possibility of making the ACC Network. It's a smart move, likely: conference networks and branding have helped the Big Ten and the Pac-12 has reported similar success, although not yet to the same extent.

That says it all right there. Swofford gave away the third tier rights, those that the Big10 uses in their network and soon the SEC will use to form their network. So that either means wait 15 years or buy back the rights from ESPN (maybe they can use those $50 million exit fees explode ). Fifteen years will be far too late, the ACC could implode before then as revenue from networks by other conferences makes the current ACC media deal totally inadequate to compete.

Also there are only so many sports channels that the cable companies are going to want to carry, the Big10 stole a march on everyone else and leads the pack in revenue. The SEC has the clout and vision to put their own network out there now and is widely expected to announce it within the next year. That will suck the oxygen (the $$$$$) out of the room for lesser conferences. The PAC12 will likely follow (FOX would seem the likely partner), then the Big12 will merge with the Texas network and that will likely be the end of college conference TV networks with the ACC being left out in the cold.
