Gundy a popular name in SEC?

  • We're now hearing that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy might be a candidate at two SEC schools: Arkansas... and Tennessee.

Tennessee's short list is believed to include Gruden, Petrino and Gundy... If a move is made on Dooley, Gruden will get the first call, but his salary demands may be too much for Tennessee to swallow.

Why would Gundy leave his alma mater? I would think Pickens would pony up & pay up to keep him. Is Gundy dissatisfied or are these other schools just gauging if he has any interest in moving on?

    Hoo in MD

  • Gundy would be a good hire for anyone but I have a hard time seeing him leaving OK State b/c of the personal attachment. He had them within 1 game of the National Championship last year so he has to believe he can achieve that goal there and Boone will make sure he's paid well and has quality facilities.

I think Gundy's name popping up is his agent/him leveraging his success to up his salary. Smart move on his part.

Arkansas maybe. Tennessee, IMO, would be a step up.

the one where tenn hasn't been nationally relevant in about 10 years.

what exactly do you think tenn brings to the table that okst doesn't? a bigger stadium is about all i can think of.

The chance to compete in the SEC.

    ah, yes. the aggy answer.

    roger huerta

  • not exactly an aggy answer but I will bite....

Tenn does have a bigger stadium, bigger pockets, the SEC, SEC championships, national titles, Won the east back in 07. I will give it to you that Tennessee is down right now that is for sure....but Tenn has deep seeded tradition on its side.

Not saying it would be a step up or even lateral....just saying Tenn has a lot to offer that might interest him.

I doubt Gundy leaves his alma mater though so it is probably a pipe dream

Tennessee bring a bigger name and bigger and broader recruiting territory. Oklahoma St basically recruits their home state (where they are 2nd fiddle), or the state of Texas (where they are way down the list)

Tennessee can easily recruit their own state, the Carolina's, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, Kentucky, and Florida. Tennessee borders all of those other states except Florida.

Tennessee also has a crystal football and a room full of conference championships to impress recruits. Okie State has largely nothing in that category

not in the last 10 years they don't. try and keep up aubie, i addressed the timeframe earlier in the thread.

  • Tennessee is one of the biggest spenders in recruiting.... Boosters with big pockets like the Haslams.... Tennessee just built a new state of the art training center--->

    http://www.utsports.com/facilities/football_training_center.html

.... Their stadium holds over 100000.... The tradition with being top 10 in all time wins(you can look up the bowl game statistics... they've been to more than most anyone else).... The first bcs national championship winner... Top two in SEC wins.... Blah blah blah blah

complete control. and saban was in a shltty situation in miami where he was going to lose. a lot. gundy is in a kick-ass situation where he's winning double digit games in a program he built, at the school he went to, in the state he grew up in. he's a god in stillwater, and has the backing of a donor that's given $300 million to the athletic department, the majority of which has gone to his football program.

it's hilarious watching fans of old school big time programs try to justify why they're better than the new up and comers. i just had this laugh w/ texas fans about oregon.

I'm not saying Gundy is a serious option, but don't act like Tennessee is going to fall off the map. They will eventually throw enough money at the right coach to fix what's going on right now. Oregon has the booster to keep them where they are. I don't really see your point there...

  • my original point is that today, tennessee is a lateral move from okie lite.

the point about oregon/texas is that there's a bunch of texas fans who think it's a no brainer that brian kelly would jump at the mere hint of being offered the texas gig, simply because we're texas. i think that's ridiculous. i'm having deja vu w/ texas = tenn, and oregon = okst.

  • Most coaches would view Tennessee as a better job than Oklahoma State. I don't think Mike Gundy would though which is the topic.

Gundy played at Okie state and Pickens will pay whatever it takes to keep him

Dooley will be back in Knoxville

Charlie Strong will be the next head coach at Arkansas unless Louisville joins the Big 12

Saban ain't going anywhere. Kirby Smart will stay with him until he retires and then take over. Probaly 5 years from now.

Brian Kelly is at ND. Don't think he's leaving to pick up the mess at UT after he just started to right the ship at ND....

  • A&M tried to hire Gundy and we offered a lot of money. He just wanted a raise and he got it. He is staying at okie lite.
