Iowa unlikley to fire Ferentz

  • Iowa isn't giving up on Kirk Ferentz despite a third straight season of diminishing results.

The Hawkeyes simply have to hope that the well-respected coach who has twice revived the program has another turnaround in him.

Iowa (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten) is on course for its worst season since 2000, when it went 3-9.

The Hawkeyes have lost four games in a row and will need to beat Michigan and Nebraska to qualify for a bowl game.

The frustration is growing for many fans who have seen the Hawkeyes struggle to compete in the Big Ten despite a schedule that, compared with other seasons, hasn't been nearly as taxing. Getting rid of Ferentz is an unlikely option, not with a buyout of some $20 million, and athletic director Gary Barta has publicly supported the coach he gave a 10-year extension before the 2010 season.

On Tuesday, Ferentz tried his best to keep his focus on Saturday's trip to Michigan (7-3, 5-1). The future will have to wait.

  • Yep...firing Ferentz just is not an option after the contract they gave him.

Putting heat on the coordinators would be the best option.

I'd never say never, but both coordinators are in their first year in that role at Iowa. Ferentz is extremely loyal to his assistants, so it'd be surprising if he made a move with either one after just one season. There have obviously been some coaching mistakes this year, as everyone shares a role in 4-6, but I really think Iowa just doesn't have the horses this year.

I understand being loyal to assistants, but like you said - it's their first year. Iowa's underachieved before but not to this level, IMO.

They lost players, but they returned experience at several positions, including QB. If they're losing with a senior QB (with lots of starting experience), what are they going to do with a new QB?

I just think putting heat on the coordinators (whether that means firing one or both or just making sure they know that they need to improve) is the most likely option. I also think that's where the blame should lie for now.

  • The biggest crime in the Big Ten is that from 2002 - 2009, Kirk Ferententz was
Big Ten Coach of the Year 3 times. . During that period, he shared 2 Big Ten Titles, one with Ohio State and one with Michigan. Never won a Rose Bowl and never won an outright Big Ten title. His head to head with Tressel was 1 - 4. meh

In that same period (2002 - 2009), Jim Tressel was never awarded Big Ten Coach of the Year even though he won A National Championship, played for 2 others, won a Rose Bowl, and won 6 Big Ten Titles, 5 of them consecutive and outright. (I vacated 2010 wins & Title for those who care).

Kirk Ferentz was always mediocre at his best. Because of his accomplishments, Iowa will probably give him a raise.

  • sullkev, it's all about expectations. If people expect you to go 2-10, but you end up 6-6, people applaud. If they expect you to go 10-2, but end up 6-6, people condemn.

  • I can't imagine how Farentz keeps a straight face when he sees that direct deposit go into his account every month. Lulz. I repeat...most overrated coach in the country and it's not even close.
