Makes perfect sense. Go to Auburn, who the NCAA is looking at, inherit a team consisting in part of guys who chose Auburn over Alabama because Alabama is "too business like" and Auburn is "more fun and like a family" - translation - prima donnas and don't want to do what it takes to win. Try to replace that with they type of guys it takes to win, but unlike Saban, who rebuilt in the face of Tommy Tubblownout, he has to do it in the face of the greatest recruiting machine and franchise in college football. What he did at FSU isn't dissimilar from the aspect of Urban Meyer's momentum at the time of his arrival, but the FSU team he took over is NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING like the dumpster fire that is burning at Auburn.

Jimbo is a hell of a coach and a hell of a good guy. Taking the Auburn job right now seems like career suicide to me. If he keeps doing what he's doing, he could probably make the move to Auburn when Saban retires, which is a much better proposition. For those of us who heard him speak at a civic function in Birmingham last week for kid's charities, he used so many Sabanisms ("the process," etc.), we could ponder whether he's be a good replacement for Saban one day.

Auburn needs an old battle axe like Fulmer, who hates us Bammers, isn't having to ponder leaving a good job, etc. Someone like that could keep the boat afloat until Saban loses momentum or retires. Until then, it's looks to me like it's going to be a hit parade of Gene Chizik type hires getting flattned by the Saban train - processed one, by one, by one.

Jimbo did battle AU for a number of recruits in the last two cycles, some AU won, some FSU won. In either case, Jimbo knows a solid portion of AU's roster and very little rebuilding would be necessary, IMO.

As an Auburn fan, I would like the hire but don't see it being very plausible. Jimbo has been at FSU for a very long time and weathered the storm that was Bobby Bowden at the end of his career. I don't see why he would leave now unless he was truly worried about the future of the ACC as a conference.

Follow logic Lil aub. This is a coaching rumor NOT a recruiting rumor.

You make Bama fans look dumb.

It is foolish to discount his candidacy as the next Auburn coach, we are told.

No it's not. He has embedded his life in Tally now. He isn't going no where. He has HIS team now ... #9 in the country. Things can only get better for FSU.

Per his wife, picture is not shopped, from a 1987 blowout win while he was a Samford QB, he put on that hat when the backup came in. He's also talked about games from that era in detail the last couple years.

I understand why the rumors will come - Auburn would want him, his wife went there, he has a history there, has recruited well in state, SE, and nationally. Jimbo's likely to finish with 30+ wins in 3 years, and go to the ACCCG 2/3 of those. He's shown a great propensity for finding talent, both in coaching and on the field.

He effectively controls the athletic department, since our lame-duck AD has no power and the school president has no interest in managing athletics. He's probably the most game-contract-involved coach in BCS football. The boosters have stepped up for literally everything he's wanted. In 3 years he's been able to get a new weight room, brand new practice fields, IPF in '13, Stoops raise, other assistant coaches' salaries, football dorms (approved literally yesterday). The facilities improvements he's overseen have been incredible - and many of these things Bobby Bowden wasn't able to get the booster to do.

He's been handed the keys, the resources, etc. in Tallahassee. I don't think he leaves after year 3, right as the process is going to be coming to fruition. With the current roster, there will be no "weak" spots on the team for the next 2-3 years.

There's no point for him setting his career back 2-3 years. There won't be a new AD at FSU until February 2014. He has too much invested and too much control to just give it up at this point. And FSU may not be as deep pocketed as Auburn, but let's not act like there's not 2 million more that can be added to his salary if he gets a competing offer (which Jimmy Sexton will surely solicit).

I expect to continue to hear his name, but it ain't happening, folks.

I am not saying Jimbo is coming to Auburn, because I dont want him anyway. However, Auburn already has most of the little toys you talked about in this post. Auburn spent 100 million dollars building dorms for the football players to live in back in 2008 or 2009. Now, Auburn is currently building even newer dorms for the football players which will open in the fall of next year. Auburn and FSU started talking about building an indoor practice facility 4 or 5 years ago. Auburn went ahead and built their indoor practice facility and it was finished 2 or 3 years ago. Auburn also recently expanded and renovated their weight room

  • Oh yeah, I just saw a poll on another board about who people wanted for Auburn's next coach. It had 6 or 7 candidates and also an option for other. Jimbo was dead last in this poll, even below other

It might be a lot of money for a poverty striken school like FSU. However, when you have one booster who is the CEO of Apple and a second booster who was named to Forbes list of the 400 wealthiest Americans with a net worth of something like 1.6 billion dollars, it really isnt that much money

Yeah, cause a major SEC school with virtually unlimited resources and a massive fan base is going to fall off the map.

  • I'm an AU alum and I'm not totally sold on Jimbo as the answer. Still not sure that Petrino isn't a better path to bigger winning, faster. But I respect Jimbo, even back to his Samford days and I do believe that he knows that right now, the best football in college is played in the SEC. Auburn is one of the top programs in the SEC and has proven that it can win and win big.

FSU is a great job and the ACC isn't a bad conference but it's really just not the SEC. I'm not cherry picking one team vs another or saying that FSU couldn't be competitve in the SEC because they could. I'm just saying that 'on average' the SEC is a better conference.

He has spent a lot of time in the SEC and in particular at Auburn. He has ties and many friends there still. To say that AU couldn't get him or there's no way, isn't a rational thought. If that's who AU wants, they'll make it tough for Jimbo and his family to say no.

Meanwhile, good luck to FSU on what still is a very promising season.

He has an easier path at FSU and has it going in the right direction.

The only reason he would leave FSU for AU, assuming FSU will match whatever AU would hypothetically offer, is if he has some affinity for AU and/or has always wanted to coach there.

Why would anyone want a coach that took a 6 loss team and turned it into a 4 loss team? Seriously. Now if he finishes out this season with a 1 or 2 loss team...he's got leverage.

Why do we have to bring up the SEC? The ACC sucks, yet FSU hasnt been able to win the conference since 2005. You even lost 5 games that year. Going into this year the 1990's is the only decade into their entire history FSU has won more games than Auburn

Rational people who run a couple large sites had this discussion. People who run an SEC site, a UF site, a FSU site - they said they would consider FSU a top 9-14 program, Auburn at 20-25.

I would agree that is easier to win at FSU, but that is largely because the ACC is a crummy conference. However, maybe you and other FSU fans could have a party and celebrate those facts.

FSU still doesnt have the money and fan support most other top programs do, including Auburn. Somebody earlier in this thread suggested FSU moving to the Big 12 to solve their monetary problems. However, if they did that, FSU would no longer be at the top of the conference. Texas and Oklahoma would easily be better jobs. Most people would probably look at the schools and consider FSU a better job than Kansas State and that is probably true. However, I have no doubt a guy like Bill Snyder would take his two and three star recruits and kick the crap out of FSU and their 4 and 5 star recruits more often than not

HAHA Please take Jimbo. I would like to get someone else. Dont get me wrong he is ok, but until he relinquishes the Offensive play calling we wont go anywhere. With our talent Im sure we could lure in a Tressel or Peterson type.

If you want offense, you don't want Tresselball. LOL.
