Tedford still Cal’s coach … for now

  • As Saturday night segued into Sunday morning, Jeff Tedford remained Cal’s football coach … for now.

In the wake of Cal’s pathetic 62-14 loss at Oregon State and resulting 3-9 record, Tedford will meet with athletic director Sandy Barbour on Sunday to discuss the ailing state of the program.

Until that meeting concludes, Tedford remains Cal’s coach.

“Jeff and I will get together tomorrow (Sunday) and see what the solutions are,” Barbour said in Corvallis. “We’re going to start the conversation about how we get better. We’re going from there. Jeff and I will sit down tomorrow about how we get better.

“It’s a football program analysis: how do we get better? Football is really important at Cal. There are a whole myriad of things that are impacted by that. We’re going to figure out what it takes for us to get better.”

I asked Barbour her take on the recent figures released by the NCAA that show Cal to be last in the Pac-12 among academic progress rates of conference football programs.

“None of us are satisfied with that,” she said, “starting with Jeff and I.”

Minutes after the soggy Oregon State game, Tedford was asked if he expects to return as coach in 2013.

“I don’t know,” he said. “My job is to develop players. We have work to do. We’ll get back to work tomorrow and get ready to keep going.”
