  • What we're hearing...

Oregon - If Chip Kelly leaves for the NFL the two leading candidates to replace him will likely be OC Mark Helfrich and Boise State coach Chris Petersen. Don't look for Kelly to bring more than a couple of Oregon coaches with him.

Tennessee - We continue to hear that Jon Gruden and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy will be serious candidates. We're also hearing some chatter about Louisville's Charlie Strong.

Auburn - The three names making the rounds are Alabama DC Kirby Smart, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn. There will be others.

NC State - We're told that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will be a candidate.

Arkansas - We're told the Razorbacks are zeroing in on a hire. TCU coach Gary Patterson is the flavor of the week, but we're told Mike Gundy remains in the mix, along with two or three other candidates.

Kentucky - Multiple sources tell us that AD Mitch Barnhart would like to make a splash hire with someone like Mike Gundy. It's more likely the Wildcats will end up with someone like David Cutcliffe or San Jose State's Mike MacIntyre. Tommy Tuberville seemed to be in the mix prior to his "slap" of a GA Saturday.

  • Who would make the best hire with all these scenarios?

  • Sounds like some teams are dreaming.

  • I just can't see Gundy going anywhere. Money shouldn't be an issue & it's his alma mater. Maybe I'm totally wrong & none of that matters, & he just wants something different. Just don't see it though.

  • When the dominoes fall it will really get interesting. Openings at TCU, OSU, FSU?

That's what I was thinking about Gundy, but maybe he just wants something different or feels he isn't appreciated for what he does

    Navagator

  • Gundy is probably sick of plying second fiddle to OU. a move to the SEC with a huge fan base/stdium like UT makes some sense.

Is Charlie Strong in the "others" category for the Arkansas job. heard lots of rumors that he was highly in the mix. also what about Bobby Petrino's to UK?

  • With where Vanderbilt is now (thanks to Franklin), NC State seems like too much of a lateral move for Franklin. If I were him, I'd stay put and wait for a bigger step up.

  • Petersen to Oregon would be real interesting, but I'm having a hard time buying Chip Kelly in the NFL. Not saying he won't go, just can't see him succeeding in the NFL unless he drastically changes.

  • Fisher isn't going to leave Florida State, some of these coaches are just fishing for a larger contract from their current University.

Can't just run around like a nut!

    EyesoftheBuck

  • Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports appeared on The Dan Patrick Show this morning.

Just said Lane Kiffin's job could be in jeopardy if he doesn't beat either UCLA or Notre Dame.

Said 7-5 at USC in a year where BCS Championship was the goal might be enough for Pat Haden to get rid of a guy that has burned a lot of bridges in a short amount of time.

Talked about how many things Kiffin has done that have angered the USC admins. and other Pac 12 teams (sound familiar?).

I am not saying he would leave and I dont really want him. However his wife is an Auburn grad and Auburn has much, much more money than Florida State ever thought about having. Those are just a couple of reasons he might might at least give it some thought

It would seem that way on the surface, yet they settled for hiring Lane Liffin in the first place and even Pete Carroll was their 4th or 5th choice

I thought the same thing. NC State's not enough of a step up to be worth it for Franklin.

  • Lolz at Kentucky being able to lure Gundy away from OSU.

Why would he go to an SEC doormat? That would be a career killer.

Franklin's history on the east coast with MD would help him turn NC State around. Why on earth MD didn't hire him I'll never know. headslap

His offense is built on a running QB, NFL defenses are too physical for a guy to last through 16 games. You see some Pro teams run a few sets similar to his, but just in spots not an entire game.

Franklin probably realizes that the SEC East is about to get a lot tougher. He better cash in on his 7 to 8 wins this year and get out. Florida, Georgia, and USC are becoming top 10 type programs and TN and KY are getting new coaches. Ole Miss is becoming less of a door mat which means Vandy wins will be much harder to come by. All it takes is one bad year (4 to 5) wins and his stock will drop.

I do think it would be easier to win in the ACC.

However, I'm confident that programs would recognize that it's going to be difficult for Vanderbilt to become a power. I think Franklin will get better shots than NC State. I still just think it's too much of a lateral move.

One other point - I personally think it benefits a coach to show some sort of loyalty. Look at Todd Graham: one year at Pitt and he bolts to ASU. It's obvious he's looking to climb the ladder ASAP. I know most coaches are, but I think a school that's a step up is more likely to give Franklin (or any coach) a chance if he shows that he won't just drop everything if another school comes calling. I doubt programs want to be left in the lurch like Tennessee was with Kiffin, or Pitt was with Graham. If I were an AD, I'd be very wary about those kind of coaches. JMO.
