I just can't see Gundy going anywhere. Money shouldn't be an issue & it's his alma mater. Maybe I'm totally wrong & none of that matters, & he just wants something different. Just don't see it though.

    Are you from Trenchtown?

It would seem that way on the surface, yet they settled for hiring Lane Liffin in the first place and even Pete Carroll was their 4th or 5th choice

Yup. They offered Mike Riley and Mike Bellotti before and both denied USC (at one point). I think Riley even turned down Bama at one point.

  • Interesting comment about Jon Gruden getting on the college coaching carousel. I would think he would be completely comfortable in the broadcast booth.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports appeared on The Dan Patrick Show this morning.

Just said Lane Kiffin's job could be in jeopardy if he doesn't beat either UCLA or Notre Dame.

Said 7-5 at USC in a year where BCS Championship was the goal might be enough for Pat Haden to get rid of a guy that has burned a lot of bridges in a short amount of time.

Talked about how many things Kiffin has done that have angered the USC admins. and other Pac 12 teams (sound familiar?).

I can't see USC firing Kiff until recruiting is done. especially with the class he has so far

people would be setting their hair on fire for that USC job.

No way USC lets Kiffin go given the recruiting class he's bringing in. Remember that USC is still under sanctions and a huge part of their plan to weather the storm was to have a top shelf recruiting class so the cupboard would be overflowing once sanctions were lifted. Kiffin and company are the best recruiters in the country and USC's ability to recruit is impacted for 2 more years. No way USC lets Kiffin go until after the sanctions end. USC's losses have all been close - it's not like they're getting blown out or embarrassed. Heck, Kiffin has to get the lion's share of the credit for why people even thought USC would be in it this year. How fair is it to crucify him after bringing them back to relevancy and a top 5 AP finish in the first place? Not saying that USC should be anything less than 9-1 right now (vs 7-3) but take another look at that incoming class. No WAY Kiffin gets canned.

  • What about Boston College

My guess on the Coaching Carousel

    NC State - James Franklin
    Tennessee - Dan Mullen
    Arkansas - Butch Davis
    Auburn - Charlie Strong
    Kentucky - Butch Jones
    Boston College - Pat Narduzzi
    Purdue - Kirby Smart
    Vandy - Brent Venebals
    Miss State - Bobby Petrino
    Louisville - Gus Malzhan
    Oregon - Mark Helfrich
    Cincy - Chuck Martin
    Buffallo - Mike Haywood

I am not saying he would leave and I dont really want him. However his wife is an Auburn grad and Auburn has much, much more money than Florida State ever thought about having. Those are just a couple of reasons he might might at least give it some thought

having money and spending money ae two different things. our list of candidates we not that impressive compared to the wish list of a few of the other schools mentioned in the original post.

Gundy is probably sick of plying second fiddle to OU. a move to the SEC with a huge fan base/stdium like UT makes some sense.

Is Charlie Strong in the "others" category for the Arkansas job. heard lots of rumors that he was highly in the mix. also what about Bobby Petrino's to UK?

Gundy and the AD barely speak to each other. Without an AD change he is looking to get out and that is an open secret. He is a great fit for any high profile SEC job.

I thought the same thing. NC State's not enough of a step up to be worth it for Franklin.

NC State actually has pretty good facilities and sits in a good recruiting area. If Franklin went there and started keeping some of those guys in state and recruited the Virginia/Maryland/DC area he could make the Wolfpack a major player in the ACC. Remember, he went to Vandy from Maryland and really wanted to stay at Maryland.

    What we're hearing...

Oregon - If Chip Kelly leaves for the NFL the two leading candidates to replace him will likely be OC Mark Helfrich and Boise State coach Chris Petersen. Don't look for Kelly to bring more than a couple of Oregon coaches with him.

Tennessee - We continue to hear that Jon Gruden and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy will be serious candidates. We're also hearing some chatter about Louisville's Charlie Strong.

Auburn - The three names making the rounds are Alabama DC Kirby Smart, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn. There will be others.

NC State - We're told that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will be a candidate.

Arkansas - We're told the Razorbacks are zeroing in on a hire. TCU coach Gary Patterson is the flavor of the week, but we're told Mike Gundy remains in the mix, along with two or three other candidates.

Kentucky - Multiple sources tell us that AD Mitch Barnhart would like to make a splash hire with someone like Mike Gundy. It's more likely the Wildcats will end up with someone like David Cutcliffe or San Jose State's Mike MacIntyre. Tommy Tuberville seemed to be in the mix prior to his "slap" of a GA Saturday.

Does anybody think Malzan would come back to Auburn?

  • You are assuming vandy has it its ceiling. Go to that button at the top of the page that gives you team rankings for recruiting. Right now he is doing more with less. As he gets more talent then what?

Agree. And the "less" he is doing more with is getting better. VU gave him a long contract (they don't disclose $$$, but most VU posts I've read say it's around $3 million/yr). Maybe a Vandy fan on here would chime in on this. Don't see why he would take what is on many levels a step down, IMO.

  • I think Gundy will end up at Ark. Another reason to add to the above mentioned is that Ark is the school in the state with no pro team and there is tons of money. You can call me a homer I guess but with Walmart, Tyson, and JB Hunt you can imagine. I think if Franklin is going to leave it has to be this year other wise he will be at Vandy for a while. I also dont think Strong will leave Louisville mainly because him and the ad have a good relationship and he his making that program his. Look for a guy like Cutcliffe or Dykes or even a Butch Jones to go to Kentucky. I would love the Jimbo Fisher move to Auburn since it he is a great coach and would help the conference. If you look at the SEC openings then you have to agree ark is in the best position since every other school will have to pay millions in buyouts and we started the search process months ago.

Bringing back to relevancy? Pete was 21-5 the 2 years before he left. How is that irrelevant? In the last 2 years Lane can only match the same amount of losses as Pete. He can't even beat it. Lane in his first year had as many losses as Pete last 2 years.

Pete Carroll and staff got incredibly lazy when it came to talent evaluation starting with that 2006 class. That 2008 defense was no joke, but overall, the performance of Kiffin-led teams has been an improvement from the direction Carroll was taking his teams.
