We always hear Chip to the NFL---Now that an uptempo Texas A&M beat Alabama I would think many colleges would offer Chip---

There is no way Chip would leave Oregon for another college. He has a multi-million dollar, football only complex being built just for him. He moved his parents to Oregon, has a sweet house, a hot girlfriend half his age, and Nike. He is a God there, and has proven he can win. There really is nothing else at this level that he could want or need. Going to the NFL is a different story.

    What we're hearing...

Oregon - If Chip Kelly leaves for the NFL the two leading candidates to replace him will likely be OC Mark Helfrich and Boise State coach Chris Petersen. Don't look for Kelly to bring more than a couple of Oregon coaches with him.

Tennessee - We continue to hear that Jon Gruden and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy will be serious candidates. We're also hearing some chatter about Louisville's Charlie Strong.

Auburn - The three names making the rounds are Alabama DC Kirby Smart, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn. There will be others.

NC State - We're told that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin will be a candidate.

Arkansas - We're told the Razorbacks are zeroing in on a hire. TCU coach Gary Patterson is the flavor of the week, but we're told Mike Gundy remains in the mix, along with two or three other candidates.

Kentucky - Multiple sources tell us that AD Mitch Barnhart would like to make a splash hire with someone like Mike Gundy. It's more likely the Wildcats will end up with someone like David Cutcliffe or San Jose State's Mike MacIntyre. Tommy Tuberville seemed to be in the mix prior to his "slap" of a GA Saturday.

I am surprised Sonny Dykes is not on some list. Am I missing something with him?

Someone please hire Lou Holtz so I don't have to listen to his ignorance on ESPN any longer.

Holtszs gave Minnesota Blue Balls and his self depricating shtick is so worn down. I doubt he ever playd football. Send him back to Notre Shame. +1 for the Duck

Agree. And the "less" he is doing more with is getting better. VU gave him a long contract (they don't disclose $$$, but most VU posts I've read say it's around $3 million/yr). Maybe a Vandy fan on here would chime in on this. Don't see why he would take what is on many levels a step down, IMO.

As a Vandy fan, I'll chime in. What I've heard about the size of the contract matches what you've read: in the neighborhood of $3 million/yr. But in addition to renegotiating his contract after last season, he's gotten almost everything else he's asked for. After his first year, he got new turf on the football field, a new jumbotron at the stadium, rebuilt meeting rooms and dressing rooms, and Vandy just broke ground on a new $30 million indoor practice facility. This was given to a coach with a losing record after a single year. He coached the team to the Liberty Bowl and lost. Not many SEC schools reward a losing season with that kind of payout. (Don't get me wrong, I love Franklin and completely supported all of this.)

He also seems to truly be interested in doing to the football program what Tim Corbin did with the baseball program: build it from the ground up and create a legacy. Also not possible at a lot of places. (Granted, whether it's possible at Vandy remains to be seen.)

I realize he's a great recruiter, so maybe he's just suckered me into buying into what he says, but I don't see NC State as a big threat to take him away from Vandy.

Franklin's history on the east coast with MD would help him turn NC State around. Why on earth MD didn't hire him I'll never know. headslap

Kevin Anderson was not happy with the HCIW idea.

It would be weird for Cutcliffe to turn down Tennessee three years ago and go to Kentucky...

FWIW ... Cutcliffe was never offered the job 3 years ago.

I like him as a potential hire at Kentucky. No way Tennessee would go after back-to-back coaches from LaTech.

  • I think Kelly to the NFL sounds like a stretch. Think he is in a good spot. Would love to see Kiffin gone, never trusted him!

    Don Juan

  • I seriously doubt Gundy would want to leave his alma mater unless some kind of monster contract came his way.

He's had some contenders in Stillwater and has taken that program to a level it hadn't been before in my lifetime and hasn't been consistently at any point in their history. He's established some solid recruiting bases in Texas, and has a good reputation. I don't know why he would want to leave a good, successful football program to go coach for Kentucky. I think he's happy and would be shocked if he left.

  • One.. Petersen will not take the Oregon job. He prefers to stay out of the spotlight. He's not a media heavy guy, that doesn't jive with the Oregon job profile. Patterson to one of those middle of the road SEC jobs? I don't see that one either. His gig at TCU has gotten better and better as of late.

  • Not that I know anything, but I think the ACC is on the rise. They have or are getting a major TV deal for football and that will give them the money to go after top coaches. Getting a commitment from ND to play five games a year increases their national exposure. And there are a lot of really good schools in the ACC. It has more potential (IMO) to expand its brand than the SEC or maybe even the Big 12.

The Big 10 has screwed itself for greed: made a ton of money within its huge market but marginalized its brand nationally. A couple years ago, I thought ND should join the Big 10. Man, was I wrong!

The SEC is huge but I think it has little potential to expand its brand outside its geographic borders. A&M really helped, but Texas is Texas and there are a ton of divided loyalties there.

I see the ACC and the Pac 12 as the big comers. JMO.

Petersen to Oregon would be real interesting, but I'm having a hard time buying Chip Kelly in the NFL. Not saying he won't go, just can't see him succeeding in the NFL unless he drastically changes.

Seems Like a pretty logical move for coaches to jump to the NFL when they sense the NCAA hammer coming.

His offense is built on a running QB, NFL defenses are too physical for a guy to last through 16 games. You see some Pro teams run a few sets similar to his, but just in spots not an entire game.

Actually it's not...it just makes all his schemes easier...Daron Thomas was a horrible runner
