UT forced to settle for Butch Jones, cements fall of program.

  • The most concise way to detail this new is with the following statement "They are hiring Butch Jones - who lost to Derek Dooley, whom they just fired."

Way to go Tennessee! You just cemented the fall of your program.

BTW... Why am I scooping the experts on this? I'm a Carolina guy and heard this 3rd hand at this point.

Tennessee Volunteers hire Butch Jones as new coach - ESPN

Cincinnati coach Butch Jones will be the next coach at Tennessee, the Volunteers said Friday.

They have not reached the level of Kentucky... yet.

Please quit making USC fans look like idiots. No reasonable person writes off a coach the day he accepts a new job. His track record is very sold. Also, you're not scooping anyone on this.

You posted and spewed the same lines over on The Big Spur earlier this morning and you were slammed there so you choose to run here? You think I am the one out of line on this. You seem to be one of the few (10% maybe) who see this to be a solid hire. He has won at Central Michigan and at Cincinnati, good for him. Both times, he inherited teams from Brian Kelly who set him up for success at those locations. Tennessee has the history, facilities, and money to have done much better than this. Their AD should be fired.

Why do I say that? What Butch Jones has yet to do is prove that he can do the hardest part of coaching at Tennessee, recruiting top-flight players. His 2010 class was ranked 82 in the nation and 5th in the Big East. In 2011, that was 48th overall and 3rd in the Big East. 2012? 55th overall and 4th in the Big East. How are those classes working out for him? Are his players the ones who went 9-3 with wins over a down Virginia Tech and Pitt? No, Brian Kelly brought in 2/3 of the starters on his team. He has not proven to be an elite recruiter in the Big East and there is no way he can go into the home of a top-flight SEC kid and hold off other SEC schools.

What about coaching? He can coach with other people’s players but where are his? His leading rusher was a RS Senior signed by BK; his starting QB was a SR while his backup was a RS Junior also signed by BK. Additionally, someone else signed three of his top four WR’s. There were six starters on defense who were seniors and five on offense. Four of the juniors who were starters were redshirts meaning BK too brought them in. Of the 22 starters on his team, someone else brought in 15. There are no recruiting gems that he found and turned into something he rode the success of the guy he followed and when the cupboard got bare he left.

He is walking into a program that is on its heels to compete for the same kids Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and SC want. He will have to go out of state to places like Texas, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and he cannot win those battles either. Tennessee does not have the natural talent in state so he has to look outside. Good luck with that.

The simple truth is that he is in WAY over his head and he was not even the first person they wanted. They got turned down publicly by three coaches and had to settle for a guy who has always followed BK and used his players then moved when it the bottom was about to fall out. He cashed in and the process Tennessee cashed out of being a competitive SEC team. At this point in time, Vandy has a better, more polished coach who is a better recruiter. Vandy is better positioned than Tennessee after this hire.

Do your own research before you call someone else an idiot.

Oh… as for the scooping thing, Rumor Mill still has not posted about it. Why not?

Also, why do most people on TBS think you are a Clemson guy?

Not a single person has ever called me a Clemson guy. I'm about as hardcore of a USC fan as it gets. I'm also an intelligent person that doesn't walk around in garnet colored glasses. Then there's the USC fan of your ilk, who freaks out over an 18-year old choosing a different school, a coach leaving for what he perceived to be a better opportunity elsewhere, or a loss to an opponent you felt we should've defeated.

That said, none of that's relevant to your misguided post on this situation. If you want a group of sympathizers, head over to the Vol board. And you didn't need to make this post both places. You can see my reply on TBS. I'm terribly sorry that Butch Jones wasn't signing top 20 classes at Cincy. [sarcasm]I'm sure Jon Gruden would've cleaned up there![/sarcasm] Or, maybe if only Tennessee could've hired someone who was simply a coordinator and not a head coach with four conference championships in the past six years, people could feel they made a good decision.

I have no dog in this fight, and I hope we continue to stay on top of Tennessee, but I have no reason to believe this hire is ANY worse than any other realistic hire they could've made. Huge assumptions from day one are completely silly.

And I still think it's funny that you're trying take credit for "scooping" this story.

  • I personally think Butch Jones is a solid hire. The guy has won at two places and in only his second year, he was 9-3 at Cincy. He now has some relationships with coaches in Cincy at the high school level and football is pretty good there year in and year out.

There are no home run hires. You have to wait to see somebody's body of work before anybody can judge them. Oh, one exception to the rule and I have no idea how this guy retains a job and gets others:

Norv Turner. He ruined the Cowboys, Redskins, Raiders and Chargers. His overall record is below .500 with teams that are historically good. I think this guy has dirt on the NSA, CIA, FBI, KGB, Roger Goodell and David Stern for that matter. I can't wrap my head around him, but it is what it is...

  • You know,I was not wanting CBJ to get the job 3 days before he got it, then I did my research. Then I found out that he has won 4 outright or shared conf.titles, won coach of the year TWICE in the big east and is a solid Xs and Os coach, of whom his players love. You can say he won with CBK players all you want but is anyone saying CBK is winning with CCW players, no and they shouldn't. It doesn't matter what players you have if you can't coach them. Hell, look at Dooley, he had bray, hunter,Patterson and one of the best OLINES in the country and he still couldn't win. I think CBJ will do just fine once he proves he and his staff can recruit.

    Vollogan33

  • CDD did not win at any level.

CBJ who replaced him has won at every level he coached.

Not sure the point of o.p. but it is true that CDD beat him when they played I would guess that CSS should be fired since they lost to CJP who is no longer a coach at ky? similair logic the cock fan is spouting. just sayin.
