USC loss pulls Bama closer

The de-commitment of four-star safety Max Redfield from USC has put Alabama within striking distance of the Trojans for the No. 1 spot in the Class of 2013 247Sports team football recruiting rankings.

Max Redfield will likely end up at Notre Dame or back with USC. He de-committed from the Trojans Sunday.

The 247Sports team rankings are based off of rankings and ratings within the 247Composite, which weighs equally the rankings and ratings of prospects from major recruiting media outlets in order to eliminate any notion of bias and create a truer team ranking on an industry and national level.

After the latest update to remove Redfield, USC retains its No. 1 spot with 782.03 points. The Crimson Tide is No. 2 at 773.70, a difference of 8.33 points.

Even with the Redfield de-commit (and it’s not out of the question that he still ends up a Trojan), USC has limited space available in this class. Players like five-star cornerback Priest Willis, four-star safety Tahaan Goodman and five-star defensive tackle Montravius Adams all are still in play for USC, among others, but don’t expect the class to grow by more than 2-3 more when all is said and done.

Alabama has more possibilities and more room. The Tide will likely sign 23-25 prospects this cycle.

The Crimson Tide is in the mix for Adams, five-star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, five-star receiver Robert Foster, five-star linebacker Matthew Thomas, four-star safety Vonn Bell, four-star all-purpose back Alvin Kamara, four-star defensive end Tim Williams and four-star linebacker Kendell Beckwith, among others. Granted, Alabama likely won’t land but a third of these prospects tops, but it may be enough to claim the top spot for the third consecutive recruiting cycle.

Michigan currently is No. 3 (764.60 points), Ohio State No. 4 (763.23) and Florida No. 5 (762.51). The Wolverines, Buckeyes and Gators all have major targets remaining.
