Bama takes the top spot

After the latest update of the 247Composite rankings, which equally weigh recruiting rankings and ratings from media outlets that cover recruiting (including 247Sports), Alabama has pulled ahead of Southern California in the 247Sports team rankings.

Five-star receiver Robert Foster committed to Alabama last week.

USC also lost the verbal commitment of five-star defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes on Thursday night.

The Crimson Tide had a big week last week, landing five-star receiver Robert Foster (Central Valley, Pa.) and also prep school offensive tackle Brandon Hill (Hargrave Military Academy), who had previously been committed to Ole Miss. Bama now has 779.29 points to USC’s 772.01.

Alabama likely isn’t finished with this class, either. The Tide still has 247Composite five-star (and top offensive lineman) Laremy Tunsil (Lake City, Fla./Columbia) and 247Composite four-star safety Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland) that they are strongly in the mix to land. They must beat Georgia (the other longtime favorite) on Tunsil and Ohio State and Tennessee on Bell. Also, Tennessee defensive end commit Jason Carr (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) has set an official visit to Alabama. The top overall prospect in the country, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, Ga./Grayson), five-star (247Composite) safety Tony Conner (Batesville, Miss./South Panola), five-star (247Composite) defensive tackle Montravius Adams (Vienna, Ga./Dooly County) and five-star linebacker Reuben Foster (Auburn, Ala.) all remain in play for Alabama.

USC isn’t finished, either. The Trojans have held the top spot in the 247Sports team rankings for most of the recruiting cycle and still have a number of highly-ranked targets left on the board, including five-star (247Composite) safety Leon McQuay III (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) and five-star (247Composite) offensive tackle/defensive tackle [link url= "http://247sports.com/Player/AShawn-Robinson-11314"]A’Shawn Robinson[/link] (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), who remains committed to Texas, but has officially visited USC and is said to be highly-interested in switching to the Trojans. Vanderdoes also said Thursday that USC remains in consideration along with Notre Dame, Washington and UCLA.

Rounding out the top 10 at present are Ohio State (767.60), Florida (767.50), Michigan (765.09), Notre Dame (764.81), Texas A&M (760.52), LSU (753.59), Georgia (747.55) and Texas (737.89).

The Bulldogs have perhaps the highest ceiling of any team in this class. They are still in the mix for Tunsil, Adams, Foster, four-star running back Alvin Kamara (Norcross, Ga.) and others and have a realistic chance of landing all four and then some.

247Sports team rankings are updated as commits happen and rankings and ratings change. Stay tuned for the latest updates from now until national signing day on Feb. 6.
