Buckeyes move into Top Five

Another five-star addition, another big change in the 247Sports team football recruiting rankings for the Class of 2012.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer now has the Buckeyes in the top five nationally in the 2012 team football recruiting rankings from 247Sports.

In what is the first landmark recruiting win for Urban Meyer at Ohio State, the Buckeyes gained the commitment of five-star defensive end Noah Spence (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) on Sunday.

The Buckeyes moved to No. 4 nationally with 840.04 points, just ahead of Texas A&M (838.49) but well-behind rival Michigan (847.06), Texas (859.46) and Alabama (861.11).

The Crimson Tide took the top spot from the Longhorns earlier today when they landed five-star running back T.J. Yeldon (Daphne, Ala.), who was committed to Auburn for most of the process.

Spence was a longtime lean to Penn State before the Jerry Sandusky scandal and subsequent dismissal of Joe Paterno as the program’s head football coach. Maryland was a big factor in his recruitment as well, but once Meyer took over the Ohio State program, it appeared barring something changing (like Penn State defensive line coach Larry Johnson joining the Maryland staff) that he would end up in Columbus.

His commitment gives Ohio State perhaps the best defensive line class in the country at this point. Five-star defensive end Adolphus Washington, four-star defensive tackle Tommy Schutt and four-star defensive end Se’von Pittman highlight that position group in this Buckeyes class. Schutt (Penn State) and Pittman (Michigan State) were committed to other programs prior to Meyer’s arrival in Columbus.
