It didn’t take very long for Maryland receiver Stefon Diggs to make an impact for the Terps in Saturday’s 27-20 win at Virginia. Diggs returned the game’s opening kickoff 100 yards (officially) to give Maryland an early lead as the Terps improved to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Maryland's Stefon Diggs is the National True Freshman of the Week according to 247Sports.
The return actually was 105 yards as Diggs brought it out from five yards deep in the end zone and raced untouched.
“I figure he’s going to go down and then I see him start and I go, ‘No, no, no. Go, go go! Yeah!’ It was one of those deals,” Maryland head coach Randy Edsall said. “With (Diggs) nothing he does surprises me.”
Diggs, an in-state product from powerhouse Good Counsel High in Olney that picked the Terps over Auburn, Florida, Ohio State and nearly every other team in the country on Feb. 10, also had a team-high 89 receiving yards on four receptions, sparking Maryland to a win that doubled its total from a season ago. For his efforts, Diggs is the 247Sports National True Freshman of the Week.
Though Diggs leads Maryland in every receiving category (21 receptions, 453 yards, three touchdowns), where he’s really shined is in the return game. He ranks fourth nationally in kickoff return average at 33.3 yards per return, tops in the ACC. Diggs also averaged 10.94 yards per punt return, which is good for No. 26 nationally and fifth in the conference.
Diggs was ranked as the nation’s No. 10 overall prospect, the No. 2 receiver and the top overall prospect in the state of Maryland by 247Sports in the 2012 class. He was numerically rated as a 99, which equates to a five-star prospect.
According to the recruiting industry-generated 247Composite, Diggs was ranked as the nation’s No. 8 overall prospect, the No. 2 receiver and the top prospect in Maryland. He had a 247Composite rating of 0.9967, which equates to a five-star prospect.
