Former Kansas and New Mexico basketball player Gethro Muscadin was involved in a serious car accident Wednesday.
“Please pray for Gethro Muscadin,” New Mexico coach Richard Pitino wrote. “He’s fighting for his life after a horrible car accident last night. Every prayer matters right now. So tragic and devastating.”
"Last night Gethro Muscadin and a friend were involved in a serious one car accident," Kansas coach Bill Self wrote. "He, his friend, and their families need a miracle. Please lift them up as Gethro fights for his life."
Muscadin had played in 12 games (nine starts) for New Mexico this year after transferring from Kansas. He averaged 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Muscadin had racked up two double-doubles this year. But he recently left the New Mexico program.
“We spoke after SMU, and I think we both agreed it wasn’t the right fit for him,” Pitino told KRQE.com. “We wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully we can help him find a spot that is the right fit for him, and we’ll help him with whatever we can moving forward.”
The 6-foot-10 Haiti native was part of Kansas’ Class of 2020. Muscadin played in 12 games for Kansas, averaging 0.2 points and 0.8 rebounds per game.
“(Muscadin) impresses [in practice] every day defensively and [with his] activity,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. "He's just so nervous. He's just not quite ready but he's going to be really good."
But Muscadin transferred away from Kansas in March after just one season.
“We recruited Gethro to come in and be a contributor for us over time,” Self said in a press release. “He certainly got better daily during practice and was a terrific practice player. With the rules being such, with guys getting the year back, Gethro sees it's in his best interest to look into some other opportunities and we totally support and agree with that decision.
“If he continues to progress, gets stronger and keeps his athletic ability like it is now, he’s going to be a really good player. We certainly wish him the very best and know that he will be successful. And he knows that we’ll always cheer for him.”
Muscadin was a three-star recruit and the No. 171 prospect in the Class of 2020, according to the 247Sports Composite. He was the No. 27-ranked center and No. 2-ranked player out of Kentucky, as he finished up at Aspire Basketball Academy after playing for Sunrise Christian in the Wichita, Kansas, area.
At the time of his commitment, Muscadin chose the Jayhawks over several other notable suitors, including Kansas State, TCU and Texas Tech from the Big 12. Others to reportedly offer Muscadin included Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Minnesota, Rutgers, SMU, Texas A&M, UNLV and Wichita State.
No more information about the severity of Muscadin’s car accident is known at this time.
“Lobo fans: please pray for Gethro Muscadin, who was in a serious car accident last night,” the New Mexico Men’s Basketball team wrote on Twitter. “Every prayer helps.”
