The Red Wolves practiced in pads for the first time on Tuesday.

Coach Blake Anderson said the Red Wolves had better energy in the practice. He said the team showed maturity with improvement over Monday. He said the team reported in good shape but is having to practice with more intensity to get into game shape.

A-State will take tomorrow off to give players a chance to rest and recover.

Cleaning out the notebook from media day.

Arkansas State defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen:

-After losing Kyle Wilson, there is need to find the QB of the defense.Trent Ellis-Brewer has been is his office almost all summer. Need to ease him back off injury.

-The middle of the sandwich (LB/CB) is the thinnest right now. Feeling better about the CB position, talent-wise than any time since he's been here. May see some times where there are multiple nickels on the field based on who we're playingi

Hopefully Tajhea Chambers can take charge at the MLB. Both Tajhea and Kirk Louis know the defense. Chambers played in spring at 255 pounds and has lost 15 or more lbs since. Caleb Bonner has worked at both LB positions, needs to bring physicality. Freshman Derrick Bean has the measureables,  needs to learn the defense.

The Red Wolves have 18 defensive linemen on scholarship. “Brian Early has a lot of toys to play with.”

Not concerned about the losses at DE.

DL coach Brian Early:

-Usually play 10-12 usually during a game, may be more this year, and depending on who we're playing. “We could be really special at the DT positions.”

-Christian Howard and Griffin Riggs had impressive summers. Ryan Taylor is a violent player, very mature for a freshman. Terry Hampton is physically ready for college football (400 lb bench press)

LB Coach Nick Paremski:

-Delaware State transfer Logan Wescott has moved to Nickel from safety and will back up Justin Clifton.

-Darreon Jackson is a wild card, and could play anywhere,  but Clifton could be flexible, too.

DB coach Allen Johnson:

-The plan for now is to try and keep Darreon Jackson at one position, but he could play S, NB, WLB.

-Safety Jeff Gibson had a good summer in the weight room.

-Demari Medley shows up on tape any time they put it on, and can play slot CB, Nickel, or Safety.

OL coach Allen Rudolph:

-Nour-Eddine Seidnaly and Troy Elliott will compete for RT

-Most close knit group he's had in 24 years of coaching. Center Jacob Still has become a leader up front. Still has really grown over the last year
