so we had an attempted break in (update)

  • I discovered one of the screens was pulled off a window on the back of the house.  There is no way to remove our screens without unlatching them from the inside other than yanking them off with force.  It was bent up pretty good.  They did not get in.  Looks like it happened over Thanksgiving while we were out of town.

We live outside of Atlanta in Douglasville.  Any suggestions on a security company?  we are out of town a lot and really just want to set it for when we are gone.  the house already has all the hardware, we just have never signed up for monitoring.

Update: we ended up going with Ackerman Security.  Slight upcharge since we don't have a land line.  They did not try and sell us anything.  He said the system that was already in our house was like new even though it is about 10 years old.  The backup battery was dead.  He said he could sell me one for $35 or I could order one on line for $15.  Amazon had it for $14.99 with free shipping.

We have no exterior alarm, it is just inside.  That thing is loud as he!!.  Especially with nothing but hardwood floors on the main level.

  • Tis the season. I've been hearing about more and more burglaries lately. About 3/4 of a mile down the street, a burglar got shot in the head while trying to break in on Wednesday. Some friends who live about the same distance away had their house broken into and ransacked while at work.

I have no answer for the question, but I think its a good idea to look in to.

  • Dogs are my security system.

  • Ours as well.

It's that time of year again.  People trying to steal around the Holiday's every year it seems like.  ohlord
  • I use Loud Security and I would not recommend them. Of course, my house has never been broken into so I can't say for sure they are as worthless as they seem, but I only have them because they are cheap and the $18 a month makes my homeowners insurance go way down.

The issue we are having in my neighborhood right now is people stealing FedEx, UPS, etc. packages off door steps.

By dumb luck, this week I left the front door open (not unlocked, but open) and no one seemed to have entered my house. It definitely freaked me out in the morning  until I remembered I did it.

  • Whereabouts in Douglasville?  My wife grew up there and my father-in-law is a retired deputy in Douglas County.

  • I've only used Ackerman Security, so I can't really compare them to other companies.  However, for the times we have accidentally set off our alarm over the past 14 years, they have always called within 1 minute, and usually in about 15 to 20 seconds.  So they have a pretty fast response time.  It is also easy to call them and have a temporary note added to our account to indicate when we will be away so that the Police will be called first and then our cell phones next if an intrusion alarm goes off.

  • off Chapel Hill Rd near Annawakee.  If he works as a bailiff in the county courts he needs to wake up.  Couple of years ago I was jury duty and all the bailiffs were retired deputies.  The one in our courtroom was asleep most of the time.

  • Security systems are WORTHLESS. Get CAMERAS. Thieves smash and grab, even if you have an alarm system. I want to catch the sorry pieces of crap, so I have cameras.

  • First off, do you have any teenagers? My daughter had a mysterious tear in her screen which appeared to be how she left the house. She denied it, but I'm not stupid.

  • We use Frontpoint and have been pleased with them.

  • My in-laws use a company called "Southeast" something -- in the Birmingham area though. Yesterday, my wife went unannounced to their house and used the basement key she had to get in. Boom, alarm went off so she ran upstairs and cut it off. 5 minutes later, Vestavia PD shows up with hand on holster wanting to know what she was doing there.

My wife explained that it was her parent's house and she didn't know the alarm automatically went off when entering the basement door without delay. She said he left without asking for ID or anything.

Ironically, we had to move their phone lines while they were remodeling the room with the alarm connection so it had been disconnected for several months. I just hooked it back up to the phone line a couple of weeks ago.

  • Large breed cuddle dogs that look mean.

  • Haha. No. When he retired, with social security, va benefits, and pension, he is making more than he was as a deputy, so he does nothing except go to Martin's on highway 5, Burger King, and other restaurants.

Might want to check Clark Howard's website. He's bound to have some good tips on services where you've already got the hardware in place.

    I use frontpoint too...

Hey man, you case the house?

Yep, when I went by to fix that cable box for them.

    They have any security?

Nope, just some cameras. No motion detection, alarm, sounders, or a panel.

    Cool, I'll bring the masks.
  • Suggestion from our black yardman

"Get yourself a big dog. Put him on a long chain, feed him realllllll good."

We had our house broken into in Florida. The Detective said that houses with no security system signs are a prime target for teenagers. They cruise the neighborhood, note the houses with no signs and decide when to go after the house. Fake signs are better than no signs.

  • I would thin k it was kids.

Not sure why you have chosen to be an *** to me on these boards tonight.

    Forthe record, I have both.

If you have a sign out in the yard for a security company, which a lot of people do, with no actual system, how would a crook even know for sure if you had one.

Great job on being a 50k post badass by the way. Congrats.

no kids.  just the two of us.  It was also the screen to a kitchen/keeping room.

Plenty of camera systems send messages when they detect motion. I'd agree with better locks, a dog, security sign, and cameras. Just one camera showing the front of your house with a motion sensor goes a very long
Way. Additionally, if you live in a neighborhood try your best to have as many doors and windows visibleto neighbors. If someone can go around to the back of your house and break in without anyone being able to see that makes you a very easy target.

Yep, I'm having cameras installed as I type this.  HD and set to record on any motion.  Can view from Iphone, Ipad, computer or any internet connection.

Bought them at Best Buy. Swann - 8-Channel, 4-Camera Indoor/Outdoor High-Definition NVR Security System - Larger Front

Thats what we in the business call a security system.
