#14 CSF vs #16 JMU Men’s Soccer

  • Looks like a really good match for our Men’s Soccer Team. What are the prognosticators saying about this match up of ranked programs?

  • Discussion
  • JMU won 1-0 in OT. They controlled play (18-7 shot advantage) but Fullerton was able to hold them off of the scoreboard until OT. First loss of the year but playing JMU will help the RPI because they are #10 in the RPI and already beat #1 RPI Wake and have a game with #2 RPI UVa coming up on 10/15.

Another big game coming up tomorrow at Maryland, the defending national champs. They have a #26 RPI and don't look like they are quite as strong as they were last year but picking up a win there would help with getting noticed on selection day for regional bids, hosting sites, etc.

The Big West is the #7 conference in RPI and has a good shot at multiple bids. Here are the updated RPI's:

    Fullerton 16
    UCSB 40
    Riverside 42
    Northridge 45
    Irvine 48
UC Davis, Cal Poly and Sac State are between the upper 80's and low 120's

There are a couple of rivalry "non-conference" games this weekend (Cal Poly at UCSB and UC Davis at Sac State). The Big West did away with divisions this year so everybody only plays each team once. Those teams are doing the same thing Fullerton does with Long Beach in baseball. Conference play starts next week.

  • Thanks for the updates FBF. Some of us are actually following this.

  • Tough road trip.

Maryland 2, Cal State Fullerton 0
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 14th-ranked Titans (8-2-1) gave up a penalty-kick goal and a score off of a set piece 3:14 apart midway through the first half in a loss to the defending national champion Terrapins (6-3-1). Christian Pinzon recorded eight of Fullerton's 15 shots with three of them being on goal, including a shot that went off the post in the first half.

In two "non-conference" rivalry games, UCSB beat Cal Poly 3-1 in front of almost 10,000 tortilla tossing fans in Goleta and UC Davis beat Sac State 2-1 in OT on the road.

Next week, Fullerton plays at Northridge, who has lost four of their last five games, on Wednesday before a big match with UCSB at home next Saturday.

RPI update. The Big West is the #6 conference.
