The Fresno State Bulldogs have added yet another Central Valley star athlete who decided to return home to play for Head Coach Jeff Tedford. Former Fresno (Calif.) Edison High three-star linebacker David Tate Jr. reported to practice Saturday for the Bulldogs' second day of Fall Camp.

Tate committed and signed with the UNLV Rebels in the 2016 recruiting class. He spent the last two years in Las Vegas, one as a redshirt. He did not see the field last fall. Tate will have two years to play after sitting out the 2018 season due to transfer rules.

Out of high school, Tate reportedly held offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Utah State, Washington and the former Fresno State coaching staff. Tate’s Edison High teammate, three-star defensive lineman Leevel Tatum, also committed to UNLV with Tate in the 2016 class - Tatum transferred to Fresno State last fall and is now eligible to play in 2018.

Current Fresno State assistant coaches Jamie Christian and J.D. Williams were on the UNLV staff when the Rebels out-recruited the former Bulldog staff to land commitments from the two local stars.

Tate was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 83 outside linebacker in the nation and the No. 103 overall prospect in California in the 2016 recruiting class.

Of his game, 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins wrote, “Tate has a good frame, runs well and shows the positional versatility to play just about any of the linebacker positions in college. He's athletic enough to play in space, is strong in run support and has a nice upside to him.”

Other Central Valley High School stars that left home for college, but have since returned to Fresno State, include receiver Michiah Quick (Central High to Oklahoma), defensive lineman Ricky McCoy (Roosevelt High to Washington) and running back Romello Harris (Tulare Union to Washington State). In 2017, the Bulldogs also suited up former four-star Central High recruit Johnny Johnson as a graduate transfer from UCLA.

In all, more than 20 Central Valley prospects fill the Fresno State football roster heading into 2018.
