Bloomberg Business on how Europe views the US...

  • Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.

Most Europeans breathed a sigh of relief when Joe Biden won the U.S. election in November. The 46th president nevertheless faces a tough audience on this side of the Atlantic as he prepares for today’s inauguration. After four years of Donald Trump antagonizing the bloc, sentiment among its citizens has shifted away from America: a majority see China as the world’s most powerful nation within a decade, and would rather stay on the sidelines if there was a conflict between the two superpowers, according to a new poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations. Most think the U.S. political system is broken, and doubts remain over whether the country will be able to mend internal divisions and help solve global issues like climate change. Is America “back,” as Biden promised? Europe remains to be convinced.

  • Europe didn't like Trump calling them out as the cheapskates that they are for not fully funding NATO and having America pay out billions of dollars to make up the difference. When Biden was on the job (in the Senate and VP), he of course ignored it. If you look at Europe and see everything China has bought up, they will be paupers.

  • Well CSB, if Trump's intention was to weaken us as respected world leaders, then mission accomplished.

You'll note that according the writer's opinion, our attempts to weaken the Chinese have only strengthened them. But at least Trump tried to name a virus after them.

  • They gave us that piece of excrement trump and his klan. They've always been Frenemies in my view.

Wrong, again. The increased funding schedule came about under the Obama administration.

  • Trump did good and bad regarding NATO and the UN. Making them pay more was a good thing, but he also rubbed some countries the wrong way.

The United States faces its own unique challenges. But when you compare the US to countries like China or say Japan and others there are major fundamental differences. These are monocultural countries, with one predominant race, one predominant language, religion, etc.

Imagine how many fewer problems the US would face if everyone looked the same, thought the same way, spoke the same language, held the same religious views, etc?

My point was that Trump so alienated/offended the EU that the US, rather than being their greatest ally, is now more or less on par with the Chinese. Trump pushed the Europeans away. He clearly had some sort of special relationship with their greatest adversary (Russia) and he didn't treat the Europeans as a valuable ally. He didn't hurt the Chinese with his trade policies and insults; he helped them by forcing the Europeans to look elsewhere -- to the Chinese -- for a more reliable ally.

Trust was broken and they are very rightly concerned that we can't be trusted in the future -- not as long as populist Trumpism was able to garner well over 40% of the vote. Biden can't say "they won't be back" because they might be. They can't count on us to keep the populists at bay. Comrade LapDog is a perfect example, with his talk of a second Civil War.

  • Biden will have the same trouble with China, because China will offer the Europeans economic deals they can’t/won’t refuse.

So you like when other "world leaders" chit all over us, economically and politically, like they did under Clinton, Bush and Obama. Of course they're celebrating Biden, or at least some of them. They now know they have a brain dead patsy in the White House who they can roll.

In a couple of months, we'll all be far, far richer than Comrade LapDog's hero...
