The Miami Hurricanes football program is going to modernize its offensive approach in 2020.

New offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was hired to bring UM's attack into the modern era by installing a spread offense at the school for the first time in program history.

Since arriving at Miami in 2016 as defensive coordinator, coach Manny Diaz has consistently had the Hurricanes defense as a Top 25 group in the country. Now that Diaz is head coach, he's looking to get the offense on a similar level.

Miami averaged 25.7 points per game in 2019, which ranks 90th in the country. Miami averaged 367 yards per game on offense, which ranked 99th in the country.

Can Lashlee's system help UM's offense reach its full potential in 2020? That's the key question for the Hurricanes going into this season.

Under the direction of Lashlee in 2019, SMU ranked ninth in the country in total offense while averaging 489 yards per game. They also ranked seventh in the country while averaging 41 points per game.

The Mustangs averaged 80.9 plays a game this past season, which ranked third in the country.

Lashlee called an offense that not only played with pace, but also generated big plays. SMU had 50 plays go for 30-plus yards this season. Only two schools had more – UCF and Oklahoma.

SMU starting quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 3,929 yards with 34 touchdowns and ten interceptions. SMU had three receivers that totaled at least 700 yards.

Lashlee is a disciple of Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. Lashlee played quarterback under Malzahn at the high school level and was the offensive coordinator under him at both Arkansas State and Auburn.

Helping Lashlee make a smooth transition with installing the new spread offense is Houston quarterback transfer D'Eriq King.

During his last full season of action at Houston in 2018, King passed for 2,982 yards with 36 touchdowns while rushing for 674 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Lashlee recently joined 247Sports college football expert Brandon Marcello on the 247Sports ‘Social Distance’ series and touched on a number of topics as the 2020 season nears.
