Arizona Bowl

Arizona Bowl

  • Arizona Bowl has already sold 34,000 tickets

Mike Christy / Arizona Daily Star

In his negotiations with the CBS Sports Network, Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl chairman Ali Farhang did one very smart thing. “I insisted that I control the date and time of our game,” he said. That’s why the fourth Arizona Bowl will kick off at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday at Arizona Stadium. “Thirty-six of 41 bowls are controlled by one network (ESPN) and they are essentially programming fillers,” Farhang said. “We won’t do that in Tucson. We won’t play at night and we won’t play in the middle of the week.” The Arizona Bowl had sold 34,000 tickets as of early last week. Farhang insists a sellout of 55,000 is possible, but if 40,000 show up for Saturday’s Nevada-Arkansas State game, he and his staff should get a medal.

Pretty cool to see, I'm sure its mostly locals as I doubt many Nevada or Arkansas State fans are making the trip. It will look good on TV though. If the payout is increased I could see this bowl taking over as the bowl for our champions once we lose the Vegas Bowl. Its nice not to be at the mercy of ESPN and to get a later date.

So what are everyone's predictions for the game? I think the team comes out fired up, and we win 35-17.

  • Discussion
  • I think this game is a shootout.
65-61 Pack, with a defensive play to end the game.loco

  • I’m happy the Pack got the AZ bowl... the loss to U Never Left Vegas tempered Pack fan enthusiasm greatly for this game though ... I like that the game is late December in a “warmer” location ... Boise? No way... Kinda bummer AZ bowl is same time as b-ball game ... might be more fans at the b-ball game...

    I am forever NevadaProud

  • I have trouble seeing the Pack come out on top of this game. The weather hasn't helped their practicing. They were out practicing in the rain yesterday. I don't like to predict against the Pack, so I'll just go with a close game.

I wonder how many of those "sold" tickets have to be guaranteed by the teams. It's sad if not many Nevada fans make the trip, but I have to admit I'm one who isn't going. I was stoked to make the trip if Nevada went to Tucson, but when they lost the cannon, I lost my enthusiasm. The game being the same time as the Utah basketball game was the last nudge I needed to not go.

I hope it's a big turnout and the Pack pulls out the win.

  • Everything seems to be lined up against us this game in terms of fan interest. Lost to Vegas. Same time as hoops game. Same time as Peach Bowl. I’d be shocked if 34k really showed up. A shame considering how successful this season has been overall.

I don’t know anything about Arkansas State. Not feeling good about this game coming off the Vegas loss. But I’ll never pick against us. 27-24 Nevada wins.

  • The loss to to the Rebs brought me back down to reality m. Nevada will either hang in tough or get blown out by IMO a better opponent in Ark. St.

    35-14 Bad Guys

  • This is so funny to me. You fans being down on your team echos exactly what our fans feel like right now. We had a mid-season slump and then finished with 4 wins. But those wins were against some pretty bad teams in our conference. I have it as a pick 'em but I won't root against our boys. 34-31 stAte.

We were pretty happy with the team until the last game of the season They laid a complete turd against our inferior in-state rival and lost a trophy that's very important to us.
Our outcome will depend on how well the QB takes care of the ball.

  • We have had some injuries so getting healthy will help.

The biggest concern is our head coach. His wife has battled breast cancer and it reappeared about the same time our mid-season slump started. That wasn't public at the time but we found out later. The prognosis isn't good so most figure he's distracted, to say the least. Others will argue that his coaching has been lacking for several years and they have no faith in him. I'm a wait and see guy right now. He blew it last year with our bowl game against MTSU. We should have handled them and we seemed ill prepared.

Our QB, Justice Hansen, is deceptive. He seems like he's swimming in molasses some times but manages to make throws and runs you wouldn't expect. Watch out for our freshman running back, Marcel Murray as well. He's opened some eyes this year.

What are the weaknesses/strengths on your end?

No this board doesn’t speak for WE. This board is a bunch of irrational fans who love the Pack one minute and crap on it the next. Very few of us expected this team to win 7 games this season. Nevada will play hard and continue to build. Like any bowl game, the team with fewer turnovers probably wins. Go Nevada!

And another lecture on how we need to think and believe exactly like TahoeBlue or WE must be wrong. The great and powerful OZ aka. TahoeBlue. Nothing positive about losing the Cannon to Vegas. We all love the Pack here...

    Offense:
    - reliant on the deep ball. Ironically the best thing Gangi does is throw the deep ball. If he’s tasked with working the ball down the field turnovers happen
-Really solid running backs and wrs. Run blocking isn’t great but our backs (Taua is the best imo) can make things happen. Pass blocking better than run blocking.

    Defense:
-Run defense is good. Pass defense is ok. Hopefully we get one of our best pass rushers back for the game as that’s a strength.

Hard for me to be optimistic after blowing a 23 point lead to Vegas last time out where everything fell apart but there you go. It pretty much comes down to if good or bad (like 3 interceptions) Gangi shows up imo. At least if it’s ugly we have the basketball game

Someone has to point out the nonstop bitching and complaining.

  • Practicing in the weather... You don't have a IPF?

Nope and won’t have one anytime soon.

Yeah, the only coldweather school in our conference that doesn't. Football facilities aren't exactly our programs selling point.

    No, and neither do--

    *Looks up ASU's facilities page*

    ...nevermind.

    banghead

  • How many of those 34,000 had to be bought by the universities?

  • Off to a pretty crappy start, but a big stop on 4th down.

  • The offense looks weak so far. They need to get something going.

  • Ty’s had a great career at Nevada, but it might be time to pull him. It’s clear the staff doesn’t trust him and he just looks lost on the field. If this was a normal Nevada defense, ASU would be up 6 touchdowns.

  • That "interception" should have been an O'leary-Orange catch- a tie goes to the offense, not the D. We are getting a raw whistle in this game too, just like the Basketball game. We are still in it somehow though. Gangi has absolutely no confidence.

  • The whole offense looks terrible. 56 yards rushing?

  • We had no business winning that game, but I'll take it.

  • Hyperbole alert: this feels like a program-saving win. Not that a loss would’ve caused Mackay Stadium to shutter its doors. It’s just that after the UNLV collapse another bowl loss here would have been devastating in terms of morale heading into the off season and next year
