Aussie punter added to 247 composite rankings

Arrow20
  • So apparently somewhat recently since last I last checked, 247 added in the Aussie punters Murco's ranking of 80.03, which dropped Ohio State basically a full point in their team average.

How ridiculous is 24/7 sports for skewing the rankings like this based on adding in specialists like punters and kickers when they are on a completely different numerical scale for their rankings that is basically capped in the low - mid 80's when all other positions are based on a 100 pt. scale. It's such an inadequate and stupid way to represent the strength of a recruiting class that is judged on average team ranking...not good.

It's whatever. Just not that big of a deal to me. If it makes you feel any better, you can just calculate our average without him in the mix.

If it's any consolation, it added 1.70 points to our total composite rating.

  • I think his concern may be that it is the sort of thing that could prevent us from reaching "all time greatest class" status....

...edit...come to think of it...that's just average. I have to think it helps our total score. But maybe bragging rights against the other big program averages is on the line....

  • Sucks but this is what happens when you add specialists. Gonna bring your average down, it was inevitable.

  • There are kickers and specialists in the NFL HOF.. the grading system is flawed and doesn't support the importance of those positions.. not sure why a kicker can't be labeled a 5 star amongst his positional peers.. why they compare those positions against others is criminal..

    This.

Justin Tucker has scored 140 points a year the last 3 years. That’s a ton of points.

Grading them against “normal” positions is just inevitably going to hurt the class. They should really have their own rankings.

    Bingo...this is the issue
  • I don’t understand the reason for 247 ranking specialists. They say that their rankings are supposed to reflect where they think players will be drafted, however 1.) hardly any specialists are ever drafted, and 2.) all of the specialists are rated as 2 and 3 stars anyways, so the ones who do get drafted still wouldn’t have accurate rankings

  • The only ranking that matters is the one that comes out after the playoffs.

It's tricky. There's no doubt that specialists add value. In some cases, they add a lot of value. Mike Nugent, Andy Groom and Cam Johnston all had major contributions to our last two national championships. I'm personally a huge advocate for the impact of punting, it's one of my favorite qualities of Tressel; he really left a huge impact on how I view punting.

But the position is ultimately still secondary to others. I think they should probably boost specialists a bit. Right now the average seems to be around 80, it would make more sense to have that be closer to 83 or something, with the potential of reaching a Top 500 ranking.

  • Yea that’s BS

  • The funny about this is that you can probably evaluate punters and kickers in a camp setting as well or better than any other position. I know its not as sexy as watching a blue chip QB air it out in 7 on 7, but you can definitely judge leg strength and accuracy at a camp. The people doing the rankings for the national sites just don't seem to care.

  • What are the criteria for ranking kicker/punters? It does seem weird that the number one kicker in the country could be rated .81. Makes no sense. Don’t we rate QBs against QBs? Tackles agains tackles? What would a Kicker have to do to get a 5 star rating. Consistently kick 100 yards?

Low 4 star at that point

Sounds like they lack athleticism /s

  • Who cares. If he’s the best punter in the country, What does it matter?

I do, we should be able to look at the ranking and know what kind of kicker or punter he is. How good he is at his job. Not how athletic he is or what ever other criteria they use. If you take the best kicker on the planet and rate him a .81 what good is the ranking? What is it telling us about his ability to kick?

  • How do we ensure this thread reaches Wiltfong and co? Bring up on the morning five next Thursday?

The best punter in the country.. What country Australia? .. I am Sure 247sports contacted Crocodile Dundee boarded a plane and flew to Australia during COVID to scout a unknown punter in the outback..

LOL, you are probably right. I just want to know how good of a kicker he is. If all the good kickers are rated about the same what good is ranking them. Is it too hard to differentiate between the best kickers? Dunno...

It’s almost like we are getting pros from this kicking school in Australia. They seem to be producing a lot of them.

This school is producing a lot of kickers for big time schools. It surprises me that they are not aware of who they have coming out of each class. I also get that many don’t consider kickers real football players but it would be nice to know how good of a kicker they are based on the rankings. This system does not seem to have any real value to the consumer.

  • The point is, if he’s good enough to be rAnked a 3 star he’s pretty good by projection standards.

Reminds of Disneys movie The Worlds Grearest Athlete from back in the 70's....great movie by the way when I was a young lad.

I get that as I feel most people do. Maybe the solution is to modify/reduce their contribution score to the total? But also rate them as kickers only in the 5 star. I don’t know. But I would like to know if a kicker is worthy of a 5 star status amongs his peers. Does that make sense? That way we may know if this is generation type talent or just a good kicker. A special kicker/punter can make a huge difference in a game. Especially with how little we will be using a punter and how we need a kicker to consistantly hit that corner near the end zone.
