ATLANTA — As reported the other day, safety Delarrin Turner-Yell is another casualty of the bowl season after breaking his collarbone. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley confirmed that his chances of playing in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl are slim to none.
“Yeah, he got hurt in practice,” Riley said in his arrival press conference Monday afternoon. “Right now, our expectation is that he would not play. But we’ll see how the week goes on.”
A sophomore from Hempstead, Texas, Turner-Yell has started all 13 games this season and ranks second on the team with 75 tackles, including 5.5 for loss. He’s logged three pass breakups, a quarterback hurry and forced fumble. To say his loss is anything other than devastating would be a gross understatement.
But that means redshirt sophomore Justin Broiles will almost surely be pressed into more action and have to step up. Broiles this year has accounted for 15 tackles, including one for loss, and a pass breakup while playing in all 13 games.
“Well, we’ve got a lot of guys that are,” Riley said. “You know, I think Coach [Alex] Grinch has done an outstanding job of developing those guys, and we’ve had a lot of kind of bumps and bruises throughout the year; we’ve played a lot of different lineups. As we’ve talked about so much, especially at the beginning of the year it seemed like a hot topic, we were playing so many different players. And times like these are when those things matter and when they show up.
“And so Justin’s had a very strong year for us, but we have a lot of players that have as well, and so we’ll put the best ones out there and know we’ve got guys that are experienced and ready to play well.

It’s part of the third straight year the Sooners have dealt with something in the lead up to the CFP. In 2017, Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield had an illness. Last year, second consecutive Heisman winner Kyler Murray was under the weather, and wide out Marquise Brown’s Lisfranc injury kept him out against Alabama. Now it’s this.
And the news also coincides will some other negative news surrounding the program. Upon arriving, Riley also confirmed last week’s report that running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Trejan Bridges and defensive lineman Ronnie Perkins are suspended for the contest against the top-ranked LSU Tigers.
"Everyone did travel, and the availability of the three guys that you mentioned, or that have been questioned, those guys won't play," Riley said.
Riley, however, still would not comment on exactly why the three have been suspended.
"I don't air guys' dirty laundry out. You guys know me well enough like that," Riley said. "So they get that enough in this world. So they won't be available to play."
The fourth-ranked Sooners take on the Tigers Saturday inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
