Lamont Butler etched his name in NCAA Tournament lore with a buzzer-beating, 17-foot jumper to send San Diego State past Florida Atlantic, 72-71, in Saturday’s Final Four national semifinal. San Diego State dug out of a 14-point hole and pulled off the fifth-largest comeback in Final Four history.

“The plan was just to get downhill, they cut me off a little bit, I looked up and there was two seconds left,” Butler said. “I just had to get a shot off. So I hit it. It’s unbelievable. I’m glad the shot went in, I’m just happy for my team right now.”

San Diego State faces the winner of Miami-UConn in Monday’s national championship game.

“We gave up 40 the first half and we cut the points in the second half down,” SDSU coach Brian Dutcher said. “Like I said, our defense keeps us in the game, and if we can make a timely shot, we’ll win. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Florida Atlantic's incredible run from a No. 9 seed to the Final Four was mere seconds away from continuing for at least 48 more hours. But San Diego State's defense buckled down in the second half, and the Aztecs devoured seemingly every offensive rebound down the stretch to stay alive. With the clock ticking, Dutcher opted not to call timeout and trust his veteran group to find a way. Butler proved him right.
