***Quick note on PAT/2-point conversions***

Arrow35
  • Much has been made of Vols coach Butch Jones saying he and his staff had a chart that said Tennessee should kick an extra point rather than go for a 2-point conversion after scoring a touchdown that gave them a 12-point lead with 10 minutes, 19 seconds left in yesterday's game at Florida.

As we all know, the Vols kicked the extra point, took a 13-point lead and then lost by one point after the Gators scored two touchdowns and two extra points.

I was able to obtain a similar PAT/2-point chart from a previous Tennessee staff, and their chart didn't say kick the extra point in that situation.

Attached below is the full chart.

  • Nice find Wes.

His explanation doesn't stand up. No chart in the history of two-point charts has ever said to go for 1 in that situation.

  • Imagine that.

  • That chart says kick

  • That chart says kick

His "deal" is to ask questions that need to be asked. Whats your deal "bro"?

  • What's your deal bro?

    What's yours?

This is a very relevant topic no matter how you personally feel about it.

Certain things need to be talked about and questioned and if it hurts your feels don't participate.

  • That chart says kick

    +6 +12 says 2

  • That chart says kick

    You're doing it wrong.

  • The Chart said go for 2

  • +6 +12 says 2

Thanks I was looking at +7 +13 line

  • Thats what Butch did; did it wrong.

I just get the feeling Wes has an agenda

  • That chart says kick

No. Before the TD the lead was 6. After the TD the lead was 12. Chart says go for two.

  • nm

  • Am I the only one that doesn't need a chart to tell me to go for two?

  • It's common freaking sense. Up 12, you kick the extra point, makes it 13. 2 TDs beats you. If you don't get the 2 pt conversion, 2 TDs still beats you. If you get the 2 pt conversion, 2 TDs ties you. I'm not a football guru, but simple math > Butch's analytics dept

  • His explanation doesn't stand up. No chart in the history of two-point charts has ever said to go for 1 in that situation.

Correct. Butch knows he f'd up, and he thinks this fan base is dumb enough to take his word as gospel.

  • I just get the feeling Wes has an agenda

Then so does every other local and national media member critiquing or reviewing this game.

It sucks to have to be discussing these things over and over but at this point in time they are very worrisome trends IMO.

That fact is this shouldn't even being a talking point but once again a 4th quarter lead was blown and very, very questionable coaching decisions and calls were made that directly effected the outcome.

  • Thats what Butch did; did it wrong.

    Possible

  • His explanation doesn't stand up. No chart in the history of two-point charts has ever said to go for 1 in that situation.

    you are absolutely correct +

Quick question Wes, do you have access to a chart for accepting and declining penalties?

  • I just get the feeling Wes has an agenda

Butch was asked a question and gave a completely bogus answer. It's completely fair to call him on it.

BTW, I'm very proud of where Butch has our program. The foundation is very strong, the talent level is much better, and there are many things for which to be thankful.

But the man isn't infallible. He screwed up a few things yesterday. How he responds is very important to the future, and that includes not giving bogus answers. The fans and, more importantly the team, will see through it and he'll lose support very quickly.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't need a chart to tell me to go for two?

NO!! I didn't have a damn chart when I was screaming at the TV to go for 2. I know there's a lot going on at the moment but he should have been prepared. That score came on a long, methodical drive. He had plenty of time to think about "what if" we score. I MIGHT be more understanding if it came on a pick 6 or sudden score of some sort...nah...I wouldn't.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't need a chart to tell me to go for two?

No. Common sense says go for 2.
