Why is Jeff Tedford considered a QB Guru?

Why is Jeff Tedford considered a QB Guru?

  • The guy has had 1 QB drafted in the last 7-8 years...and that was Aaron Rodgers who basically had one good year after he transferred in from a JC.

  • That is a good question although that talked seems to have died down the last couple years. My guess is because of the quick turnaround he made with the program with Boller and Rodgers. I thought Rodgers had 2 decent years at Cal? Nate Longshore was a dissapointment.

He basically made his bones with his 2004 performance against SC.

  • Joey Harrington and Akili Smith? Didn't he coach those two world-beaters?

Yea I guess so at Oregon.

  • He coached five first round draft picks, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, David Carr, Kyle Boiller, and Aaron Rodgers. The last quarterback he had drafted in the first round was 2005. For a seven year stretch he coached some great quarterbacks. The funny thing is Aaron Rodgers the last quarterback he had drafted in the first round was drafted lowest out of all these quarterbacks due to his throwing motion and fear that he was a system quarterback for playing under Jeff Tedford. Also, Jeff Tedford coached Lane Kiffin.

  • Trent Dilfer/David Carr/Akili Smith/Joey Harrington/Kyle Boller/Aaron Rodgers. Pretty impressive list. However, if you changed your post to 'should Jeff Tedford still be considered a QB Guru', that is a fair question. But one can see how got that because at one point he had consistent and impressive record of producing very productive QB's

    From Wikipedia:

    .

"Tedford coached each of the following first round NFL draft picks at the quarterback position:

    Fresno State
Trent Dilfer 6th overall 1994, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
David Carr 1st overall 2002, Houston Texans

    Oregon
Akili Smith 3rd overall 1999, Cincinnati Bengals
Joey Harrington 3rd overall 2002, Detroit Lions

    California
Kyle Boller 19th overall 2003, Baltimore Ravens
Aaron Rodgers 24th overall 2005, Green Bay Packers"

    .

Nice to be "attached" to Carr after coaching him for one season...when he wasn't the starter and attempted 11 passes.

To you and the others who posted these names...thank you.

I guess I should have phrased the question better. I just know how many Elite-11 QB's that the guy has had on his roster, and none of them seem to do anything...and these were HIS recruits.

....with an empty series of downs when it mattered the most.

  • I can't believe Ayoob never made it in the league.

  • Norm Chow has developed some great quarterbacks Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer,Matt Cassel, and Matt Leinart. He had three Heisman Trophy winners Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, and Matt Leinart. Also, he coached John David Booty, who was drafted in the NFL similar to Jeff Tedford with David Carr.

Are you giving him credit for developing guys who are great QB's in college, NFL or both?

  • Are you giving him credit for developing guys who are great QB's in college, NFL or both?

Both. Norm Chow developed some great college quarterbacks that won Heisman Trophies and National Championships. Additionally, his quarterbacks were drafted high and some won Super Bowls. Norm Chow is a quarterback guru. His players have been successful in college and the NFL. Jeff Tedford has Aaron Rodgers as his only great NFL quarterback and Chow has Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers, and Matt Cassel. Jim McMahon and Steve Young won Super Bowls. Steve Young won NFL MVP awards and a Super Bowl MVP. Most of the success quarterbacks have in the NFL is due to their NFL teams and coaches, but some credit must be given to their college coaches who helped prepare them.

That just made me laugh !!! Nice and up vote !!!

How were Steve Young and Jim McMahon his QB's if he was coaching WR's while they were there? Now if you want to give credit to the QB coach while those guys were at BYU then I would agree that they play a role in the development. From what I see, those guys are Ted Tollner and Mike Holmgren.

  • Anyways, trying to get back on point, I think at the next level, guys either are going to have it, Manning, Brady, Brees or they aren't Leaf, Harrington and tons of others. While Manning may have had help along the way, no one can coach the way he prepares Mon-Sat.

Well, that's the reason Tedford gets the accolades -- he had Aaron Rodgers. Best, Loel Schrader
