Q&A: Tim Drevno assesses o-line play; USC's run game

  • Discussion
  • "They're doing a good job. There's some situational football we got to clean up, just the short yardage and the goal line stuff, but it's all fixable things." lol "Yes, Yes, Mrs. Lincoln, but other than that, how did you like the play?" "Just" the short yardage and goal line stuff." "Just" that. What is drevno's IQ, anyway? Four?

  • Helton's 170 Yard aspiration/goal is a clue as to why Helton is lacking not only as coach, but also as a thinker, a leader of an organization who should have a much more comprehensive and nuanced view of offense and how it contributes to winning.

Using his patented Heltonlogic, LSU and Bama rush for that much and they're elite, championship caliber programs so if we do so as well then that's the move! We might as well change our uniform colors to crimson while we're at it to make us even more elite.

That 170 yards has led to us barely squeeking by the Arizona schools, all while ranking 80th in 3rd Down Conversion % and
110th in Red Zone Offense. Just like Graham Harrell accumulating yards that don't actually correlate with scoring (9th in Total Offense, 46th in Scoring) , tallying up an arbitrary number of rushing yards doesn't mean much when you can't run the ball in short yardage /red zone situations, well enough to prevent hard to convert 3rd and longs, or covert 4th and shorts.

The issue isn't rushing yards, it's how and when you get those rushing yards, how does the run game help you score, how does it keep the defense honest so they can't drop 8, does it allow your physicality to also psychologically defeat your opponent, etc.

ConMan, Scam, and their clan are not the answer.

  • I mean if you think about their philosophy, that goal isnt that bad. ideally we would want them to rush for more yards, but this is a pass happy offense. What is our expectations for this offense? My expectation is, they need to get those tough 4 and 1 yards smh. They are running the ball better than I thought except on those 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 situations

  • If their short yardage running improves I think they’ll be fine, considering the schedule. If the short yardage 3rd/4th down run game improves it’ll open up the short yardage pass for an easy slant. But that’s a big if considering this has been an ongoing issue for years

  • Let's be honest; for the past 4 to 5 years our offensive lines have not developed under Drevno.

This fact certainly isn't lost on recruits. None of the top guys in the west want to play for this guy.

  • Jack: as BLL pointed out, their scoring is NOT commensurate with the yards gained. In other words they flounder in tough situations. Our offense is not made to get short, tough yards--in situations where run is expected. And that is its doom. With no QB under center, the handoffs are slow-developing, which plays right into the hands of a stacked box. Also, as he pointed out, we are not efficient in the red zone, which can be a failing of this type of offense since the field is smaller. So as far as I'm concerned, BLL's stats are devastating since nobody gets points for running a bunch between the 20s. It's all about scoring, just as a good defense is all about preventing scoring. And we are mediocre to poor in the relevant categories. Yes, we are 2-0, but we are playing Russian Roulette, and if you watched the Deer Hunter, you know how that turns out.

  • PaulyD.. your Yes, we are 2-0, but we are playing Russian Roulette, comment is right on. I don't think you have to be under center to solve the issue/s, it could be one partial solution but not the one and only. The Sooners and K Sate have no issues punching it in from the gun, but we are Hindered by having a high school freshman football coach for an OC. He literally knows nothing, other than what he was taught 15 years ago, and apparently he isn't going to allow himself to grow by learning.

” I don’t wanna hear about no muthaf***** ‘ifs!’ All I wanna hear from yo’ azz right now is, ‘You ain’t got no problems, Jules, I’m ON the mutuaf*****. Go back in there, chill them ****a’z out, and wait for the cavalry, who’ll be coming directly!’”—Samuel L. Jackson to Ving Rhames in Pulp Fiction
